  2. Inspiration • As a Community Rehabilitation Coordinator, I have served individuals with an array of disabilities; however, job development for the deaf culture is new to me. I received the referral for this job seeker at the beginning of this semester- empowering me to seek resources and stretch my expertise. • How can I communicate efficiently? • How could I educate myself to better serve my job seeker? • How could I incorporate technology into the CRP Hierarchy of Services?

  3. Collaborative Resources • Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf and Blind for Division of Rehabilitation Services (Region 4) • Regional Interpreter (one-on-one for this job seeker) • Client of DRS- referred to as a job seeker in CRP services

  4. BARRIERS WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY • Inability to communicate with others • Restricts job seeker from gaining community relationships • Could result in lower rate of job retention once gaining employment • Unemployment • Restrictions on seeking/receiving services

  5. INTERVENTION

  6. ATC- Accessible Technology Coalition • The UbiDuo is made up of two identical keyboards whose displays face towards the other user. This enhances the ability to have face-to-face communication through typing. • This technology enabled me to communicate with my job seeker during work adjustment training and transition into direct placement services.

  9. My Hands on Experience • Initially, the intake was successful through collaborative efforts. Together, we were able to establish an understanding of services and pursue the CRP relationship with technological resources. • Moving forward, DRS purchased the UbiDuo for my job seeker so that his communication skills increased with those unable to use sign language.

USE IN CRP SERVICES • Location • Library- resume building, job search, etc. • Local Fitness Center- hands-on training (used to assign tasks) • Curriculum • Preparation of Personal Profile • Resume Building • Gaining work experience in the community • Use • Constant to ensure understanding and fluent conversation • Funding • DRS funding for client’s ownership

  11. REFLECTION My job seeker has been very patient with me learning his culture. With this being my first experience in serving a deaf individual, it required outside research to ensure positive service delivery. The use of the UbiDuo improved my understanding of this job seeker’s expectations and hopes of employment.

  12. ...Continued The UbiDuo alleviated the initial barriers and empowered me to take sign language classes so that we could communicate when work experiences may not be compatible with the equipment. Overall, the UbiDuo assisted my job seeker to describe his career goals: Janitorial, I.T Services, or Food Prep Also, using this technology helped me assist him with resume building and job searching tools

STRENGTHS • Builds rapport between clients/job seekers and collaborative resources • Reduces frustration for the deaf culture when attempting to express themselves- vise versa • Minimizes the # of professionals needed in day-to-day services • Maximizes available time for services • Educates community partners • Empowers partners to extend their education and learn sign language • Easy to use • Linked partners to other technology

  14. BARRIERS • Decreases face-to-face expressions • If relied on, could further hinder possible work environments (ex. Dishwasher position) • Funding- I found myself separated from this technology because our agency was unable to purchase one ($2,299) • Could increase frustration in the deaf culture; especially those who are fluent in sign language. • Other technology may need to be used alongside the UbiDuo (ex. Laptop, Smartboard, etc.)

VISION Due to my large coverage area and recent inclement weather, I had limited use of this technology; however, my job seeker and I have collaborated via texting and TTY phone so that the UbiDuo can be used in his Individualized Plan of Employment. How can we incorporate the UbiDuo? • Educate the Community • Customize Employment to match needs • Continue using other resources to communicate with the deaf culture

  16. OUTCOMES • Our ultimate goal is for the job seeker to gain competitive employment.   17. CONCLUSION AS SERVICES CONTINUE TO BE PERSON CENTERED AND TECHNOLOGY (UbiDuo) IMPROVES COMMUNICATION, EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES WILL REQUIRE SOME AMOUNT OF CUSTOMIZATION FOR THE DEAF POPULATION.
