  1. “Establishing Authority From the Bible” False Standards Of Authority

  2. Not Authoritative:Man’s Traditions (Mark 7:1-13) Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem. Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders. When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?" He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, But…

  3. Not Authoritative:Man’s Traditions (Mark 7:1-13) their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' "For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men--the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do." He said to them, "All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. "For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.' "But you say, 'If a man says to his father or mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban"-' (that is, a gift to God), "then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, "making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do." (NKJV)

  4. Not Authoritative: Philosophies of Men • (Colossians 2:8) • Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, • according to the • tradition of men, • according to the • basic principles • of the world, and • not according to • Christ. (NKJV)

  5. Not Authoritative: Old Testament/Law of Moses • (Ephesians 2:14-16) • For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. (NKJV)

  6. Not Authoritative: Old Testament/Law of Moses • (Colossians 2:14-17) • having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. (NKJV)

  7. Not Authoritative: Old Testament/Law of Moses • (2 Corinthians 3:6) • who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (NKJV)

  8. Not Authoritative: Old Testament/Law of Moses • (Romans 2:14) • for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, (NKJV)

  9. Not Authoritative: Old Testament/Law of Moses • (Galatians 5:3) • And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. (NKJV)

  10. Not Authoritative: Papal Supremacy • No mention of Pope or Catholic Hierarchy in the Scriptures

  11. Not Authoritative: Elders • The Authority the Elders Have Originates From the Scriptures, Not the Elders Themselves. • (1 Peter 5:3) • nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; (NKJV)

  12. Not Authoritative: Elders • The Authority the Elders Have Originates From the Scriptures, Not the Elders Themselves. • (Titus 1:9-11) holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain. (NKJV)

  13. Not Authoritative: Preachers • The Authority Preachers Have Originates From the Scriptures, Not Themselves. • (Galatians 1:8) • But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. (NKJV)

  14. Not Authoritative: Preachers • The Authority Preachers Have Originates From the Scriptures, Not Themselves. • (2 Timothy 4:1-2) • I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. (NKJV)

  15. Not Authoritative: Creeds • (Matthew 15:9) • And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" (NKJV)

  16. Not Authoritative: Creeds • (Colossians 2:20-22) Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations-- "Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle," which all concern things which perish with the using--according to the commandments and doctrines of men? (NKJV)

  17. Not Authoritative: A Congregation’s Desires • Bible: Our Sole Guide • (2 Thessalonians 3:14) And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. (NKJV)

  18. What Must Someone Do to Be Saved? • Believe in God/Jesus (Jn. 5:24; Heb. 11:6; Jn. 3:16) • Repent of Your Sins (Ac. 17:30) • Confess Christ With Your Mouth (Rom. 10:9-10) • Be Baptized “For The Remission Of Sins” (Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16, John 3:5) • Remain Faithful (Mat. 10:22)
