  1. The Prevalence of Domestic Violence in Family Law

  2. WA’s Domestic Violence Statistics • National data for Australia shows that domestic violence was a factor in approximately 21,000 legal cases in 2014-15. And although the highest incidence occurred in the Northern Territory (88 per cent), Western Australia was close behind at 84 per cent. • During the same period, 1552 legal aid family law cases were lodged in WA. They included allegations of physical, sexual, mental, emotional and financial abuse, prompting a demand for more funding for domestic abuse victims. • Whilst alarming, these statistics show that if you’re experiencing relationship problems, you’re not alone. The high number of family law cases also ensures that action will be taken.

  3. Major Changes Proposed • Through the work of family law firms, such as DCH Legal, support groups and campaigners, changes are being made to reduce the number and impact of DV incidents. In fact, former Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty (pictured), was recently back in the news, pushing for a major overhaul of the family law system. • Backed by nearly 100 community groups, Batty believes the current system is failing victims and their children, and she proposed major changes to the Family Law Act. At DCH Legal, we support these changes, and are endeavoring to be part of the solution to this problem.

  4. Issuing Restraining Orders • As one of the largest family law firms in Perth, DCH Legal often deals with the aftermath of domestic violence as we help clients through the journey of separation and divorce. And while some relationship break-ups are amicable, and require minimal legal input, those involving domestic violence are never easy. These cases often end up in court, and often involve the serving of a restraining order to protect the victim. • Those experiencing domestic violence are urged to take action, by reporting their situation to the police and seeking professional advice from specialist family law solicitors.

  5. How DCH Legal Can Help • Practising exclusively in family law, DCH Legal comes into contact on an almost daily basis with the victims of domestic violence. We provide not only legal support, but a chance to regain control and start fresh. If you are experiencing relationship problems with which we could help, call us today. We’re ready to provide you the best possible outcome, and guide you every step of the way.
