  1. Botulim toxin, or Botox in short, has derived its name from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that is used in the procedure to affect the muscles within the body. This procedure is used in two forms – one is to medically treat people with muscular conditions, and the other is to cosmetically remove wrinkles from the skin by paralyzing the muscles. Botox is performed as a non-surgical cosmetic treatment for more than 6 million people across the globe every year! It is thus the most popular treatment executed to help people look younger by reducing fine lines and wrinkles. The toxin is introduced into the muscles with the help of an injection which paralyzes them thus not letting them grow to form wrinkles. However, this is not a permanent solution. The effects of a single Botox session are seen for a few months only, after which the procedure needs to be renewed. This is why people have to perform Botox every 3-6 months for constant results. The bacterium Clostridium botulinum used in the procedure can be easily found in lakes, soil, forests, and even intestinal tracts of mammals and fish, and the gills and organs of crabs and shellfish. These neurotoxins when induced into the body target the nervous system, disrupting the signaling processes that allow neurons to communicate effectively. They are introduced within the body in extremely small concentrations, which prevents signals from the nerve cells reaching the muscles, thus paralyzing them. There is a small gap between the nerves and muscles, known as the neuromuscular junction. To contract the muscles, the nerves release a chemical messenger known as acetylcholine at this junction where the nerve endings meet the muscle cells. The acetylcholine attaches to the receptors on the muscle cells, which causes them to contract.

  2. Botulinum toxin has proven to be a very successful and valuable therapeutic protein; and a boon to those who can look younger than their age because of it!
