  5. Energy Audit Why have a energy audit? • To reduce carbon footprints • Reduce energy usage • Pay less to heat and cool our homes • Improve air quality • Not depend of foreign oil • Increase comfort & safety • Increase the sale of our home • National Security CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  6. What Is a energy audit? It consist of a visual inspection with the testing and measurement of air leakage, duct leakage, testing & inspecting gas fired equipment & lighting systems, etc. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  7. Visual Inspection Exterior visual inspection of : • Landscaping • Windows • Structure • Roofing • Chimney • Flue CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  8. All Structures All homes have a air leakage number. Depending on square footage and number of bedrooms is how we calculate your number. What is your number? CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  9. Exterior • We begin by analyzing the exterior structure from the roof to the landscaping. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  10. Conduction This wall was insulated and is owned by a local insulation contractor. We can see conduction in this wall. Yellow is warm and blue is cold. Taken on a 32 degree day. You are seeing the studs inside of this wall. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  11. Landscaping • Landscaping should be slopped away from the foundation at least ten feet. • Gutters • Slopping CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  12. Foundation Or you could have this! CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  13. Basement Or this CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  14. Roof • We conduct a review of the roof condition. • Slope • Condition • Gutters • Type CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  15. Ventilation We check attic ventilation upper and lower. This roof only has one vent for 1000 sq feet. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  16. Attic Ventilation Attics have to breathe. The proper amount of upper and lower vents are necessary. Without proper ventilation the attic will obtain moisture then mold. Plus it will effect the heat load within the envelope. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  17. Interior Inspection We start in the attic. Measure existing insulation, attic ventilation, bath & cooking stove ventilation. And inspect for penetrations through attic deck to the condition space. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  18. Venting • Bath vents • Cooking stove vents CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  19. Heat Rises Penetrations in the ceiling or attic deck is called heat loss. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  20. Penetrations Penetrations in the attic floor (deck) are common from when they built the house. Holes were drilled to provide electrical and plumbing. However they did not seal the holes. You can see air leakage inside of the wall (top Plate). Yellow is warm air, in AC season. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  21. Stacking Since buildings are not totally sealed (at the very minimum, there is always a ground level entrance), the stack effect will cause air infiltration. During the heating season, the warmer indoor air rises up through the building and escapes at the top either through open windows, penetrations, ventilation openings, or other forms of leakage. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  22. Air Sealing • Air sealing will reduce air infiltration, and how do we do that? • By sealing penetrations will reduce air infiltration and cold drafts. Top plate CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  23. Rim Joist The rim joist is located at the bottom of the foundation wall. The rim joist supports your floor and outside walls. Rim joists were never sealed! CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  24. Drafts Cold air drafts are common in all homes. Mainly because contractors do not conduct proper air sealing when the home was being framed. Approx, 8 hours of labor and 10 cans of foam would greatly reduce air infiltration. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  25. Air Infiltration Top plates in the attic normally were drilled for electrical wiring electrical outlets. But they were never sealed. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  26. Drafts We see air leakage from openings at the bottom of the wall behind trim. Two reasons this happens. Exterior walls: The insulation inside of the wall was cut to short not meeting the floor and the drywall was also cut to short. Leaving gaps! In addition the exterior walls are setting on top of the rim joist. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  27. Interior • Thermal Barriers • Walls • Attic • Floor Thermal barriers and air barriers CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  28. Air & Thermal Barrier To be effective the air barrier (drywall) and thermal barrier (insulation) must be properly aligned. Thermal and air barrier must come in contact with each other. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  29. Thermal Barrier Any gaps or breaks between barriers allows for air to infiltrate causing the wall, ceiling or floor R-value to fail. Same as not having insulation. Thermal Barrier CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  30. Energy Chart Depending on inefficiencies in your building envelope would depend on percentages. Each structure is different, charts mean very little until testing has been completed on that structure. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  31. Crawl Space • Floor Insulation • Vapor Barrier • Wrap Water Pipes • Air Sealing • Conditioned Crawl Spaces CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  32. Inefficiencies So how do we locate inefficiencies CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  33. Testing What do we test & measure for? Building air leakage Building pressures Air quality, CO/CO2 Duct leakage Air flow Insulation CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  34. Testing • Blower Door • Duct Blaster • Pressure Pan • True Flow Plate • Thermal Imaging • CO & CO2 • Amp Draws • CAZ CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  35. Tools Blower Door to measure air leakage Duct Blaster to measure duct leakage Gas detector to locate gas leaks True Flow Plate to measure air flow Amp Meter to measure amps High Res thermal camera CZ Energy Solutions LLC Combustion Analyzer to measure efficiency Manometer to measure pressures CO2 meter

  36. Depressurization State & Federal standards to measure the air leakage in a structure. Blower doors are used to test air leakage. We test at 50 pa. It provides a cfm-cubic feet per minute number. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  37. Blower Door • Depressurize to locate air leaks. • Measure air leakage to record your number before any work begins. • Post testing after work has been completed to measure improvements. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  38. Building Pressures We test interior pressures for many reasons. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  39. Air Quality There are a number of things we test for. CO…Carbon monoxide CO2..Carbon dioxide And their bi products CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  40. Air Quality Acetone, Acetylene, Benzene, Butane, Ethanol, Ethylene Oxide, Gasoline, Hexane, Hydrogen, Industrial Solvents, Methane, Paint Thinners, Propane, Natural Gas, and Naptha gases. We check for gas leaks. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  41. Air Quality CO2 Carbon Dioxide Many people have no idea what CO2 and there bi-products are or where they come from. And why to test humidity levels. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  42. CO2 CO2 is what we exhale it is also present in car exhaust, gas, oil, wood burning stoves, paints, fabrics, flooring materials, airplane exhaust etc. EPA says your home should be 500 ppm less than outside levels. Because we measure CO2 levels we have found mold in walls and a cracked heat exchanger in furnaces. High levels inside when compared to outdoor levels are an indication. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  43. Humidity Why test humidity levels? If your interior levels are higher than outside levels what does that tell you? Your home is holding moisture. We have found mold a number of times inside of walls because we test. Example, bedroom moisture level is ten percent higher than rest of home. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  44. Negative Pressure Back drafting of flues and fireplaces will cause sickness and or death. With a high negative pressure caused by, exhaust fans, air exfiltration and or duct leakage you could have a serious problem. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  45. Flue Drafting • Gas appliances need a negative pressure in the flue and zero to positive pressure within that combustion zone. • Gas and oil furnaces, fireplaces, hot water heater all need proper ventilation with correct pressures. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  46. CAZ Combustion Appliance Zone. Any gas, oil or wood stove outputs CO carbon monoxide. So we test pressures within that zone and also test flues for proper draft. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  47. HVAC • Heating & Air-Conditioning. We have over 15 years experience in HVAC as a installer and technician. • Test the air handler for air flow rate, static pressure & heat rise. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  48. Heat Rise We measure the temperature differences between the supply & return air plenums. Why? To operate efficiently the temperature differences should be approx 20 degrees between supply and return plenums. CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  49. Duct Leakage CZ Energy Solutions LLC

  50. Before Purchasing We have ran across many situations that other contractors have left behind. Customer purchased a new electronic air cleaner because they have health issues and or dust. Customer purchased a new heat pump because they thought the old one was in-efficient. On every issue we tested the ducts because home owner were not satisfied. Each time it was duct leakage. The duct sealing repair cost was far less than the misdiagnoses. I suspect each year home owners are ripped off millions of dollars because of not being properly educated in the building envelope!
