  1. The Triplets of Belleville By Sylvain Chomet French, 2003 81 min.

  2. Triplets of Belleville • “There’s eloquence…in the move’s gnarly imagery and Chomet’s understanding of the human impulse not just to survive but also to save others.” Time magazine

  3. Triplets of Belleville • Original, impressive and very bizarre • The best neo-surrealistic animation I’ve seen • Astonishing, outlandish, full of laughs • Relish the film’s deadpan grotesquery, flair for invention, be it in the fanciful narrative segues or various object lessons

  4. Triplets of Belleville • Tons of awards • On lots of “Best of” animation lists • Five years to develop • Complicated process • Teams in Belgium, Canada, France • Drawings turned into sets

  5. Triplets of Bellville • Influenced by “famous” characters • Josephine Baker • Fred Astaire • Glen Gould • Butt-head from Beavis and Butt-head (German cyclist) • Makes references to • Einstein Field Equations • General Relativity

  6. Triplets of Bellville • Retro, combo 3D & 2D • Used historical, archival references • Feels like a dream • Collectible music

  7. Sylvain chomet • Born 1963, Maisons-Lafitte, France • Started in comic strips and continued to create while making films • Very influenced by Nick Park’s Creature Comforts • Moved from France to Canada • Was director on Paris, Je T’Aime

  8. Sylvain Chomet • “We started out by animating a very simple cyclist's silhouette on a 3D bicycle, or sometimes only the bike. • “We printed each of these images as a line drawing and gave them to the animators so that they could draw a cyclist on the bicycle.

  9. Sylvan chomeT • Then the animators drawings were scanned and colorized, the bicycle details filled in, with matts over every bit that came into contact with human bodies: feet, hands and so on. • Sometimes we were forced to draw in the matts frame by frame, which is an extremely long and exacting process. • A lot of curses flew around.”

  10. The Cartoon according to Syvain Chomet • How the characters come to be (5 Min.) • http://vimeo.com/28071820
