A Superior High Priest. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. (Hebrews 4:14 ESV). 1. He is the Son of God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1 ESV)

  1. A Superior High Priest Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. (Hebrews 4:14 ESV)

  2. 1. He is the Son of God In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1 ESV) I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”(John 8:24 ESV) I and the Father are one.” The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. (John 10:30-31 ESV) Priests approach God, but no priest has ever BEEN God

He has passed through the heavens Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. (Hebrews 8:1-2 ESV) Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. … (Hebrews 8:4-5 ESV) He ministers in the spiritual temple, not a physical one

  4. 3. He is a sympathetic High Priest Definition: feelings of sorrow for another’s misfortune Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 ESV)

  5. 4. He is Enthroned And say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, “Behold, the man whose name is the Branch: for he shall branch out from his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD. It is he who shall build the temple of the LORD and shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne. And there shall be a priest on his throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”’ And the crown shall be in the temple of the… (Zechariah 6:12-14 ESV) A priest on the throne, as prophesied

He is Enthroned For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. (Hebrews 7:1-2 ESV) A change in priesthood, to priesthood of Melchizedek This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek… For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”(Heb. 7:15-17 ESV)

  7. 5. Was appointed at his resurrection …this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’ (Acts 13:33) • Unlike King Saul • Unlike Korah • Unlike Uzziah

Appointed a High Priest Forever The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:23-25 ESV) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)

  9. 7. He is the perfect High Priest For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. (Hebrews 7:26-28 ESV)

He is the source of salvation He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. (Hebrews 7:27 ESV) He was that spotless offering for sin, And we gain access to that blood in baptism. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (Romans 6:3 ESV)

  15. The same things that made Him a GREAT High Priest to Jewish Christians make Him a GREAT High Priest for us also!
