  2. ~20 million children in China have speech, language, &/or hearing disorders. China Rehabilitation and Research Center for Deaf Children (http://www.chinadeaf.org) ~20,000 children with hearing loss received hearing and speech training in China in 2009. Statistical communique on development of the work for persons with disabilities, 2009. The China Disabled Person’s Federation.

  3. ~ 3,000 rehabilitation centers that manage persons with speech, language, and/or hearing impairments. 2005-2010 Plan of the China Disabled Person’s Federation issued by the Human Resources Department of The China Disabled Person’s Federation 32 provincial-level autism rehabilitation institutions, established before 2009, also provide training to children with hearing loss.

  4. ~1.3 billion people from 55 ethnic groups live in China buthave access to only 200-400 SLPs and 400-800 audiologists.

  5. Capacity Building Efforts in CSD • Emerging in relation to other disciplines • Oto, Neurology, Linguistics, Special Ed • Strong focus on childhood hearing disorders • Training of leaders in SLP & Aud supported largely through international study • Australia, America, Canada, UK, & others • Development of academic training programs has varied, both with respect to • the nature of the degree • the success of these programs

  6. The goal of training legions of SLPs and Auds may not be possible unless other factors, that are also critical to sustaining a discipline, are addressed.

ASHA Journals • Seven Chinese Universities subscribe to the ASHA journals; others access the journals through medical databases • During a free trial with the National Scientific and Technical Library from June-Aug, 2011, ASHA Journals were accessed 26,579 times in China. • From Jan 2008-June 2011, 7 submissions from Chinese researchers; 5 were rejected - 2 accepted.

  12. Goal is a Sustainable Discipline For capacity building efforts to have enduring effects, all four domains may need to be addressed in a coordinated & strategic manner.
