The Great 100In the summer of 1988, a Registered Nurse by the name of Heather Thorne called together a group of Registered Nurses from across the state of North Carolina with a plan for recognizing the Registered Nurses of the state. These nurses would be recognized for their outstanding professional ability and for the healthcare services in their community. Her dream, modeled after a program developed by Registered Nurses in Louisiana, was designed to promote nursing and to raise funds for nursing scholarships. In the last 17 years, over $100,000 has been awarded for nursing scholarships.

The Great 100: General Tips • TOTALLY complete the nomination form. • Consider interviewing the person to be nominated instead of using the nomination as a nice surprise to them. • Consider asking the person you wish to nominate to fill out a blank nomination about their self and give it back to you to tweak and submit.

4. The Great 100: Ways to Nominate • Access Web Site: www.great100.org • Nominate and Submit On-Line. • Type nomination onto form on The Great 100 website, print off, and mail. • Print nomination form and complete by hand or typed. Mail. • Postmark Deadline: MARCH 31st.

5. The Great 100: RN Licensure • Give an accurate RN license number. • Licensure is checked with the NCBON for current status: good standing and date of expiration. • RN must work in North Carolina, but may have a primary license in a state with a compact agreement with North Carolina.

6. The Great 100:Primary Practice Category • Check only ONE Practice Category: Clinical, Administration/Management, Education, or Other. • Many nurse job descriptions crossover into a variety of practice settings, but there should be a primary category that their job fits into. • If you list “Other,” please define what “Other” is…Ex: Informatics, Materials Management, etc.

7. The Great 100: General Tips • Academic Preparation: Mark ALL degrees the nominee has COMPLETED. Do not include those degrees they are currently working toward. • Years of Experience: List years of RN experience ONLY.

8. The Great 100: Non-Work Related Nursing Professional Involvement • Must have been performed within the last 5 years. Please include dates. • NON-Work Related: Include memberships, committees, offices held in professional associations. • Examples: Sigma Theta Tau, NCNA, ANA, American Red Cross, ONS, WOCN, NAON. President, Chair, Co-Chair, Committee Member, Member.

9. The Great 100: Work RelatedNursing Professional Involvement • Must have been performed in the last 5 years. Please include dates. • Work Related: list memberships, committees, offices held that are work related. • Examples: Ortho Group Practice Chair Person, Neuro Group Practice Secretary, Diabetes Group Practice Member. • This may be part of their job description. • Please define if this was voluntary involvement instead.

10. The Great 100: Other Activities • Define activities including church, community, volunteer organizations, etc…within the last 5 years. • Please include dates. • Examples: church member, scout leader, PBS funding phone volunteer, community clinic volunteer, homeless shelter soup kitchen volunteer, camp counselor, missionary trip, community health fair.

11. The Great 100: Honors & Awards • Please list all received. • Include dates. • Examples: Unit, Health System, and/or Professional Organization recognitions. • Include Sigma Theta Tau induction.

22. The Great 100: Selection Process • Nominations are: • Received by The Great 100 Selections Committee Chairperson. • Assigned reference numbers and then copied. • Copies are blinded of ALL identifiers including names and places. • Blinded copies are distributed to scoring teams of 2 nurses.

The Great 100: Selection Process • The nurses on the teams individually score the nominations using a scoring tool. • Scores are compared by the 2 scoring nurses and if they can not come to an agreement on the final score, the nomination is returned to the Selections Committee Chairperson and then sent to another scoring team.

The Great 100: Selection Process • If the Selections Committee scoring nurse recognizes the nurse nominated, they are to return the nomination to the Selections Committee Chairperson and another scoring team will process the nomination. • Once all scores are submitted to the Selections Chairperson, they are tallied statistically and submitted, as a whole picture, to the Selections Committee.

25. The Great 100: Selection Process • The Selections Committee, while only seeing practice category and score without the nominee names, votes on the percentage of nurses in each practice category to receive The Great 100 honor for the year. • The primary and secondary recommendation of the Selections Committee is then presented to the Board of Directors and voted upon.

26. The Great 100: Qualifications for Selections Committee Scoring Nurses • They have a passion for Nursing. • They are not nominating a nurse while on the Selections Committee. • They are not a nominated nurse while on the Selections Committee. • It is not required that they be a previous Great 100 Nurse recipient.
