  1. Obesity in Latino Youth Obesity in Latino Youth • There are multiple ways of preventing obesity among them are: • Walk or ride bikes to school • Exercise • Eat healthy • Limit TV viewing • Some of the effects that obesity may have are the following: • Diabetes and type 2 Diabetes • Hypertension • High cholesterol • High blood • Depression By Gabriela Flores And Yeni MolinaFor more information visit: www.wou.edu/~gflores06 INTRO Obesity is a leading concern among all children but especially those of Latino decent in recent years.  There has been an alarming trend among Hispanic youth and the growing rate of Obesity.  Approximately 39 percent of children are overweight and 28 percent are obese.  Among adolescents, 44 percent are overweight and 23 percent are obese.  Also, those children/adolescents born in the US to immigrant parents are more than twice as likely to be overweight than their foreign-born peers who move to the US in later times. There is a misconception in the Latino community about what signifies Healthy.  The concept “healthy” means having enough to eat and having no illness.  However, the relationship between physical exercise and long-term health is not easily recognized.  The Latino Community needs to realize that Health, Exercise, and Good Nutrition are absolutely necessary to maintain good health and prevent obesity and its consequences. • References • Websites • The Centers for Disease Control www.cdc.gov • The Keiser Permanente Hospital www.KaiserPermanente.org • The Department of Hunan Services www.DHS.gov • The after school Alliance www.afterschollnow.org • Dealing with Obesity • With the right nutrition, you can maintain a healthy diet.
