  2. Using Color • Color can make or break and image • Some draw us in an image • Some repel us from an image • All in the eye of the beholder • Some colors that are produced in photo shop are hard to reproduce with a printer • Learn which ones work and which ones don’t

Understanding Color Modes and Color Models • A color mode is the amount of color data that can be stored in a given file format, based on an established model. • A color model determines how pigments combine to produce resulting colors. • This is how you computer or printer associates a name or number with colors. • The color mode determines the number and range of colors displayed, as well as the color model will be used. • The color model interprets the color mode information by a monitor or a printer

Displaying and Printing Images • An image displayed on your monitor is a bitmap • A geometric arrangement of different color dots on a rectangular grid. • Each dot is called a pixel- represents a color or shade. • Bitmapped images are resolution dependent and can lose detail – often by a jagged appearance – when magnified • Images with higher resolutions tend to show more detail and subtler color transitions that lower resolution images

  5. Work with Color to Transform an Image • Learning about Color Models • Gamut is the range of displayed colors • If your color is out of gamut is out of the range that your printer or monitor can display

Understanding the Psychology of Color • Some colors affect you in different ways • Here are some common responses for colors: • Blue tends to instill a feeling of safety and stability and is often used by financial services. • Certain shades of green can generate a soft, calming feeling, while other suggest youthfulness and growth • Red commands attention and can be used as a call to action. It can also distract a readers attention from other content • White evokes the feeling of purity and innocence, looks cool and fresh, and is often used to suggest luxury • Black conveys feelings of power and strength, but can also suggest darkness and negativity.

Color Mode • Lab Color Model • Based on one luminance (lightness) components and two chromatic components (green to red, and from blue to yellow) • Advantages: largest number of colors available and greatest precision with which to create them • HSB Color Model • Hue, Saturation, Brightness • The color reflected from or transmitted through and object is called hue- expressed in degree 0-360 • Each Hue is identified by color names • Saturation is the strength or purity of the color- representing the amount of gray in proportion to the hue • Measured in percentage 0% black and 100% (white) • Brightness is the measurement of relative lightness or darkness of a color and is measured as percentage • Measured in percentage 0% black and 100% (white) • Doesn’t offer in Photoshop

  8. Color Mode • RGB Model • Red, Green, Blue- additive colors • Additive colors are used for lighting, video, and computer monitors. Color is created by adding together red, green and blue light • When red, green and blue are combined at their highest value (255) the result is white and the absence of color the result is black • Colors may be different from monitor to monitor • CMYK Model • Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black • Colors being partially absorbed as the ink hits the paper • CMYK colors are subtractive colors the absence of these and black create white • You cannot see the exact colors until you print

Understanding the Bitmap • Photoshop provides two specialized color modes • Bitmap • Uses black and white color values to represent image pixels and is a good choice for images with subtle color gradationssuch as photos or painted images • Grayscale • Uses up to 256 shades of gray assigning a brightness value from 0 black to 255 white to each pixel. • Duotone mode: • Used to create grayscale images

  10. Changing Foreground and Background • Foreground color • Black by default • Used to paint, fill and apply a border to a selection. • Background color • White by default and is used to make gradient fills and fill in areas of an image
