Journal Assessment Phases: • On-Site Analysis • Data Analysis (partially concurrent w/above).  • Including: Determine overlap between electronic and print backfile(s)    • Including: Determine overlap between electronic and print current subscriptions/licensing • Review existing data regarding LBL library serial publications’ holdings, priority ranking of serials, circulation, reference usage and subject coverage • We have received the following four data sources for analysis, We will also need the rankings spreadsheet and the list of subscriptions if it includes any titles not present in LBNL journal logons: • Physical backfile journals in 50B (main and compact shelving, with coverageyears and changes in titles/publishers) • Building 62 physical titles (with coverage years) • LBNL journal logons • LBNL LIbrary journal links (includes coverage for print) • Materials Review (partially concurrent w/Data Analysis) • Includes Inventory against digital if necessary • Author Findings Review • Method for accomplishing the project (computer processing vs. searching journals by hand, combination) • It will be a combination - searching journals/lists by hand will be informed by gaps discovered in computer processing.

  5. Next Steps: Analyze Costs/Benefits Reclaim Space Price for online journals Risk: Increase in ILL turnaround times & direct cost to scientists

  6. Misc. News • End of year purchases: • Angewandte Chemie, backfiles 1962-1997 • Complements current coverage to 1998 • GeoRef Db, reference searching • NTIS, reference searching • AAAS Science Classic, backfiles to 1962 • SIAM, Locus, backfiles, complete, one time fee

Circulation & Guest Access • Guest status, sponsoring division? • ALS: division not liable for guests (1200 year) • Reduce access to physical collection to business hours? • Can be done by proxy access limitation automatically • Symbolic only • Circulation automation, scanners, proxy card readers
