  5. Occurence of earthquake has the ratio of 61% compared with the other natural disasters in Turkey.182 harmful earthquake has been occurred between the years of 1900 – 2003 in Turkey EARTHQUAKE & POPULATION They caused; - 613.000 buildings destroyed - 100.000 death 5

  7. 1999 MARMARA EARTHQUAKE • NEARLY; • 18.000 person lost their life, • 113.000 houses and workplaces were out of order, • 264.000 houses was damaged at various degrees, • 600.000 people had to left their houses. • These earthquakes caused 15 billion dollar economic loss in the country. 7

WHAT WE HAVE DONE ? • Marmara earthquake has caused the review of the capabilities of Turkey in Disaster Management and Risk Reduction efforts. • All institutions have speed up their studies in the scope of fight with disasters. • Ministry of Public Works and Settlement arranged a comprehensive “Earthquake Meeting” in 2004. 8

  9. In this most comprehensive “Earthquake Meeting” the following topics are discussed and evaluated. 1. Institutional Organization 2. Laws 3. Disaster Information System 4. Investigation of the Existing Constructions and Inspection 5. Construction Materials 6. Resource availability and Insurance 7. Reports of Training Commissions • Conscious of Society • Coordination and Active Cooperation between Public Institutions and Various Profession Groups • Preparation of Emergency State Plan • Training and Organizing in Search and Rescue activities 9

  10. Some Results of Risk Reduction and Preparation Studies A- Modifications in current legislation B- Institutional Re-organization C- Establishment of Disaster Information System D- Educational Activities E- Establishment of Turkish National Disaster Insurance Pool 10

  11. Ministry of Public Works and Settlementis establishing National Seismic Network • The number of Broad-Band Station is 20 operated by the Ministry. • This number will be 40 next year by ongoing projects. • 6 sea seismometer (OBS) will be installed in Marmara Sea. 11

  12. and also, Strengthen Regulation, Information Sharing Between the Institutions,Disaster Risk Maps,Disaster Information System,Disasters and Construction Laws Disaster Management Preparation of Strategic Plan, Micro zonning, Make Society Conscious of Earthquake ..related studies are going on. 12
