  10. What Physics with 2017 AFP Data It is even more important now to show physics results (from 2017 data) • Physics with 32 fb–1 of 2017 is the ~same as what could have been done with the full 80 fb–1 • aQGC limits will be a bit worse (2× ?) but still 10× better than with standard methods … • concentrate on the ongoing analyses: • ultra-fast ToF (technical paper) • special low-μ runs: Diffractive studies, DPE di-jets • high-μ runs: exclusive CED μμ; aQGD with exclusive γγ, ZZ, Zγ(and possibly WW) production • new analyses (CED ttbar, CED single top, ...) AFP@FWD-IB

  14. Publications • AFP ToF Performance in 2017 by Karel Cerny: • Plots (efficiency, time resolution/bar) were approved for public useATL-COM-FWD-2019-002 • next: • finalize the zToF – zVTX distributions for double-tag events; is the rate of ‘signal’ over background as expected? • finalize & approve PUB note (ATL-COM-FWD-2018-027) as CONF or SLIDE • ATLAS Forward Proton Detector Alignment with Exclusive Di-Muon Events by Vlasios and Andre: • Implement comments and finalize the note on CDS ATL-COM-FWD-2019-005 (2017 data) • submit for approval as Performance Plots, and CONF or SLIDE Note • In parallel, continue towards a Physics Note/Paper • 2018 data – first look by Rafal with signal and background simulations! • ALFA 8 TeV Elastics publication (Jorgen & Simon): finalize it in April: • quite good progress – Jorgen is currently performing the many cross checks for the last section of the note • Kick-off of the 900 GeV elastic analysis (ρ, σtot) last week … Tasklist given; needs help with lumi determination once this gets critical AFP@FWD-IB

  15. Run3 Beam Optics • ATLAS & LPC Request on ARP’s opinion on the beam optics (round vs flat; V vs H) • my personal answer: • ALFA has its “own” special optics (β*≲20 m, 3 km) and is not concerned • AFP prefers round optics, i.e. V crossing (VC) plane: • H crossing (HC) worsens the ξ, pT resolution (I think) • irradiation pattern will be flat  must shift the detectors vertically during YETS to expose fresh SiT regions • low-mass acceptance is probably a bit smaller • LPC meeting (25 Mar): CMS-PPS said they prefer to keep HC plane in IP5 (narrow vertical acceptance of diamond ToF) ! • We must make our argument to keep VC harder on the timescale of weeks • Plots of round vs flat beam proton hitx,y ellipses at ξ=0.015, 0.020, …, pT=0, 0.3, 1.0 GeV • Pure ξ-acceptance plots using 11σ + 0.5 mm closest beam approach; TCL4/5=20/40σ (?) • Peter B. is working on this; status report this TM ? AFP@FWD-IB

  16. AFP 2018 Data Loss 2 Apr, evening, a 2018 data disaster was reported by Rafal, Maciej, and Kris: wrong BX read out in SiT • high-μ data – no AFP trigger, so 2018 high-μ track data is irretrievably lost • low-μdata – only AFP trigger information • clearly an unmitigated disaster : waste of time, effort, money, lumi, and prestige ! 2-3 Apr Janusz and Marco were informed and they and I informed ATLAS Management on 3 Apr 4 Apr the collaboration was also informed Next steps: • Investigation: How did this escape detection for so long • an investigation by committee will surely be launched • investigate consequences for physics with AFP • Prevention: • design better monitoring (gnam, DQ) to prevent recurrence; shifter protocol • check list procedure after all TDAQ changes • tell “the world” – write a short “report” • in any case, I bear full responsibility for this disaster and submitted my resignation to FWD management AFP@FWD-IB

  17. Timeline (condensed from ~600 entries in MatterMost) Participants: Maciej, Krzysz, Fabian (Chiara, Sune, Elzbieta, Giulio, Bartosz, MR) • Sat, Apr 14, 2018: set up extended readout. STAA. FE tuning in steps of 1/8 BX • Sun, Apr 15, 2018: Collisions Garage. STAA. Change config.sys for SiT with 2017 values. • Mon, Apr 16, 2018: STAA Garage. Finding out tune procedure from Ivan. VLDB tests. Insert 40’: STAA timing scan • Tue, Apr 17, 2018: STAA Coll Garage. Timing scan in garage. 5 BX readout. Some confusion about TiggerLatency/TriggerDelay parameters in STAA and COMB. Noisy pixels and SiT HV. Run COMB Inserted with extended readout. • Wed, Apr 18, 2018: access. Change LTB FS-C. • Thu, Apr 19, 2018: CTP trigger window adjust. Overnight Coll, AFP in garage. • Fri, Apr 20, 2018: Trigger timing adjust (cabling @CTP). Prepare for COMB. Setup TriggerLatency to 100 and 1 BX readout. CollGarage. No check on RO timing. AFP@FWD-IB

  18. Diagnosis • Not enough expertise apart from Krzysz (TDAQ) and Maciej (TC, OnCall) on the SiT FE masking, tuning: only Fabian with some remote help from Ivan. • we lost Joern Lange, Ivan Lopez, Martin Kocian … • I think that Phase II work has taken essential people away from Operations … • Many issues arose at the same time: noisy pixels, HV settings, non working planes, suspected LTB problem (HitBus chip?), trigger rate fluctuations. • Difference between readout tune settings (and their names) for STAA and COMB configs lead to confusion. • Not enough stable beam with pots inserted: need Pots inserted to tune trigger and readout latency; it does not work well in garage … • The various tunings were all intermingled and this leads to confusion of issues. AFP@FWD-IB

  19. Remedy/Prevention • Need new and shadow experts (Trigger, SiT FE, RCE DAQ, gnam, DQ) • Institutes must step up identifying new candidates for TDAQ (1 FTE), SiT (1 FTE), DQ (0.5 FTE) tasks. • More help from Pixel Group? • DQ Task Coordinator needs to be found … • subsistence at CERN can be provided from M&O • Separate the procedures of HV setting & noisy pixel masking, trigger tuning, and readout tuning. • A master “start-up plan” and step-by-step procedures are needed (twiki) • Mandatory checklists for critical tasks (trigger tuning, readout tuning, masking, critical equipment changes in tunnel, …) with sign-off by responsible expert (twiki?) • Need DQ histograms and automated warnings for shifter and On Call • we should demonstrate DQ operation already in LS2 • Weekly run report also at TM with discussion of quality histograms and checklists AFP@FWD-IB

  20. ATLAS Software Development Grants • As announced in the ATLAS Weekly last Tuesday, ATLAS decided to introduce “ATLAS Software Development Grants“ as a measure to mitigate the shortage of developers in critical ATLAS software areas. • ATLAS solicits applications for such positions from members of the ATLAS Collaboration: email Davide.Costanzo and Karl.Jakobs AFP@FWD-IB

  24. ToF PMT-in-vacuum: • From Ludo (as chair of ToF Review Committee): • the committee considers the PMT-in-vacuum as the baseline; only if that does not work will they consider the alternative solution. • build and study prototype back-up solution: quartz window effects, behavior of flange and tube, etc. • study heating of PMT-in-vacuum using the current setup, as function of rate • long-term PMT-in-vacuum test was started in 180/R-F05 on 19.03.2019 12:17 – still fine  • get #2096 and #2097 long-life MCP-PMTs for repair & potting from Olomouc by end-May picoTDC: • chips still under test at CERN • some issue seen with fine inter-polator: resolution ~10 ps? • more news in ~1-2 months AFP@FWD-IB

  25. AFP@FWD-IB

  28. Estimated ARP Expenditures over LS2 • Estimated for all of LS2 – many cost items can be shifted between 2019 and 2020 (maybe some to 2021) • Divided into ALFA and AFP expenditures as requested by Marco • Divided “reasonably” between 2019 and 2020 (nothing yet to 2021) • Estimated “Manpower at CERN” • NOT including “Common Manpower” (e.g. Giulio), nor Marko ! • Notes: • costs tend only to go up – new items are “discovered” along the way … • should one build in an “unforeseen” or “miscellaneous” for unforeseen costs? • identified items are not all priced with certainty; ultimate costs tend to be different … • “manpower at CERN” (subsistence) is the largest single cost item and should be considered carefully … AFP@FWD-IB

  34. ToF Ultra-Low Efficiency in 2017 (Review 6 June) Reasons: • PMT life time (≲1 C/cm2) was exceeded: ~3-6 C/cm2 gain deterioration • PMTs gain goal was 5×104: actual gain @2 kV was 1-2×104 CFD threshold inefficiency … • Glue transparency deteriorated by <20% (measurements): expectation for 2018 is same … Cure: • ALD coating = long-life • Gain goal: ~104 high rate capability to ~8 MHz • must measure the PMT gain vs HV (ToT) !! In situ !! • reduce noise/pick-up to ≲10 mV for MIP=~30 mV at PAb out: 08.05 Report by Plzen : 5 mVpp • add 3rd stage amplifier PAc + inverter (need ~10× gain): 08.05 Report by Giulio: OK Note: Log(Gain) is not linear with HV. Also, at low HV, special HV divider ratios apply to maintain p.e. collection eff. In B180 there are 6 PMTs, 3 unknown (1 unmarked, 2 in ToF holders on flanges)     AFP@FWD-IB
