The Discipline of Community: The Faith of Submission Ephesians 5:15-21
To Review • 1. Christ’s work makes us into one organic Body. • 2. Christ’s work places us in definable local bodies where being part of the Body is worked out. • 3. The work of local bodies is loving one another through real burden-bearing. • 4. In local bodies, we’re called to the faith of submission.
Vertical Authority Structures • Wife to Husband (Eph 5:24) • Children to Parents (Col 3:20) • Servants to Masters (Col 3:22) • Members to Elders (Heb 13:17)
Horizontal Authority Structures • Husbands and Wives to each other in sexuality • Christians to each other • Husbands to Wives • Elders to Members • Parents to Children
Living in Horizontal Authority • Study with others to be led by the Word • Live in openness • Ask for accountability • Join Kingdom group • Listen to your followers
Living in Vertical Authority • Review your authority structures • Acknowledge the authority of your leaders • Confess your sin in your struggles • Repent in the areas you are refusing to submit in
The Example of Christ • We submit to authority because we trust Jesus • Jesus took the form of a servant to save us • Jesus patterned perfect followership • Jesus’ call for us to submit is love • Jesus’ call is for us to be in his image
