  20. The Peruvian Moche culture inhabited a series of river valleys along the arid coastal plain of northern Peru from about A.D. 100 to 800. They were one of the largest civilizations in South America. Through farming and fishing, they supported a dense population and highly stratified society that constructed irrigation canals, pyramids, palaces, and temples.   21. CULTURAL/GEOGRAPHIC – Moche Pottery, PERU This pottery is unusual because of its three-dimensional animals. Although they had no writing system, the Moche left a vivid artistic record of their activities in beautiful ceramic vessels, elaborately woven textiles, colorful murals, and wondrous objects of gold, silver, and copper. 20.   22. CULTURAL/GEOGRAPHIC – Moche Pottery, PERU One of the most distinctive art works is known as the Moche Lord with a Feline. This ceramic vessel depicts a lord sitting in a throne-like structure.   26. This ceramic vessel of a supernatural owl warrior illustrates how the Moche people of northern Peru associated warriors and predators, likening warfare to hunting prey.   28. The Moche, or Mochica, are perhaps best known for their ceramic art. Their pots include life-sized portrait heads of individuals and three-dimensional representations of animals and people.
