  3. Outreach Initiative Objectives • Improve the reach of public health information to minority communities. • Assist immigrant parents in advising their children on the USPHS as a viable career option.

  4. Public Health Information to Minority Communities • Objective 1: • Provide public health information to minority communities via: • Government websites translated into native languages. • Community presentations by bilingual USPHS officers.

  5. Public Health Information to Minority Communities • There are many minority communities around the country who would like access to public health information in their native languages.

  6. Public Health Information to Minority Communities • The Government spends a lot of resources in developing public health information in different languages. • Many people, however, do not realize that this information is available to them.

  7. Public Health Information to Minority Communities • There are many PHS officers who can speak and write in a second language, and can reach out to their native communities.

  8. USPHS Career Information to Minority Communities • Objective 2: • Provide information about the USPHS to immigrant parents to help them better advise their children on career options.

  9. USPHS Career Information to Minority Communities • Often, immigrant parents are frustrated by language barriers and lack of career information, which prevent them from effectively educating their children on career choices.

  10. USPHS Career Information to Minority Communities • By providing them with information about the PHS (the best kept secret), we are giving them a valuable tool to advise their children onto a unique career path.

  11. USPHS Career Information to Minority Communities • The boost in confidence for 1st generation immigrant parents may help a family to have a healthier relationship between parents and their children.

  12. USPHS Career Information to Minority Communities • Another potential benefit of this positive exposure is enhanced credibility of the USPHS within minority communities, thereby helping to achieve the first objective, of providing critical public health information to minority communities.

  13. Which Communities Could Benefit from this Program? • Hispanic • Korean • Chinese • Vietnamese • Jamaican • Thai We could impact any minority community as long as we have even a single officer who has a bilingual capability.

  14. How Can We Accomplish this Mission? • Sending out emails to PHS officers, encouraging bilingual officers to reach out to their local minority communities.

  15. How Can We Accomplish this Mission? • Create presentation slides in the language of interest, including bilingual public health information from various Government websites, such as NIH or CDC, and information about the USPHS, in particular.

  16. How Can We Accomplish this Mission? • For NIH website, put “multilanguage” in the search window to find various information in a language of your interest. • Contact the community of interest and set up a meeting to present the information.

  17. How Can We Accomplish this Mission? • Any officer who is interested could access the presentation slide created for the Korean community from the following PharmPAC website: http://www.hhs.gov/pharmacy/phpharm/activities.html

  18. Conclusion It takes a village to raise a child. For this initiative, however, one officer could make a difference in a community.
