  2. Appendix C: Security and Privacy on the Web This section will help you: • Learn some of the issues related to computer and network security • Find out what you can do to protect yourself and your computer

  3. Computer and Network Security • Passwords • Your primary defense against intrusion • Firewalls • Restrict certain types of Internet services from entering the network • Viruses • Can cause havoc for your computer or network – use antivirus programs to protect yourself and your systems

  4. Secure Transmission of Information with a Web Browser • Encryption • Algorithms that convert messages or any other form of information into a coded form. A password is needed to decode the message. • Digital Certificates • Help to protect against forgery. They guarantee the identity of the sender and the authenticity of a certificate.

  5. Privacy on the Web: The Trail You Leave Behind • When you visit a Web site, that server records the IP address of your computer to its log file. • Cache • Web browsers keep copies of recently accessed Web pages, images, and other files. • History List • The browser keeps a list of all the Web pages you’ve visited recently.

  6. Cookies • A cookie is information that is passed to a Web server by the Web browser program. • They are used to store information such as a login name and password. • Can be seen as an invasion of privacy, but they can be useful to you as well.

  7. Giving Out Information About Yourself and Your Family • Giving out personal information such as your address or phone number can result in junk mail, “spam,” or fraudulent schemes against you. • Be careful when having personal relationships with people online. • Children are especially vulnerable.
