Some Important Definitions... • A concentrated solution – contains a relatively large amount of solute • A dilute solution – contains a relatively small amount of solute • Dilution – the process of decreasing the concentration of a solution by adding solvent.
Concentration and Dilution • Imagine this concentrated salt solution on the left... It’s concentration isC1 = n/V1 • Suppose we diluted it by adding a bunch of water to it... It’s concentration is now C2 = n/V2 What should you notice that’s important here?
The Number of Moles in Each are EQUAL!!! Number of moles in this one... Equals number of moles in this one...
The Dilution Equation • From here we can derive the dilution equation: • Remember that n = moles! n = C1V1 n = C2V2 C1V1 = C2V2 The Dilution Equation V1 and V2 need same units!
