  1. Welcome to Week 8! ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: There are many different ways to make meaning out of our experiences. QUIET WARM-UP: GALLERY WALK (10 mins) Take a pen/pencil, piece of paper (you will turn this in) and your homework with you READ the quotes and post-its from your classmates, and SHARE your thoughts by writing additional comments/questions 2) WRITE at least 2 discussion questions relating to Viktor Frankl’s ideas on your paper HW CHECK: 1) Viktor Frankl Annotations (and completed Venn Diagram/Discussion Question) Homework: 1) What Can You Commit To? due Monday after break

  2. Today’s ObjectivesBy the end of the day, you should know/be able to… • Practice 2nd Semester Norms, Part 1: • Enter the class quietly and respectfully • Show me your homework/MASH card in the proper place • Do a silent warm-up • Pay attention & move quickly and quietly • Leave the class clean; wait to be dismissed • Develop deeper understanding of the variety of reactions to the Holocaust, suffering, and tragedy through learning about Victor Frankl and Man’s Search for Meaning • Explore the idea of “making meaning” of our experiences Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2012 Homework: 1) What Can You Commit To? due Monday after break

  3. Today’s AgendaWe are going to achieve these objectives by… • Warm-up: Gallery Walk (10 mins) • Discussing Viktor Frankl (15-20 mins) • Take notes of the main points and your favorite ideas on your paper (same paper as before; you will turn this in) • With groups: How many different meanings can we make? (12 mins) • Class share-out and reactions (7 mins) • Exit ticket (4 mins) Homework: 1) What Can You Commit To? due Monday after break Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2012

  4. Viktor Frankl Discussion Qs • If no one had heard of VF and you had to describe his views in one sentence, what would you say? • Man’s Search for Meaning is often quoted by individuals as being one of the most influential books in their lives. Why do you think this might be? • Do you see any tension or problems between VF’s and EW’s perspectives? Can their perspectives be reconciled? (reconcile = coexist, be compatible) • Why do you think VF’s ideas were considered revolutionary, and are still considered pretty radical by many? • Do you think it’s possible to live by VF’s philosophy? Why/why not? How could we get better at it? • Do you see any potential danger in VF’s philosophy? How might it be misused or abused? • Why is it so easy for humans to do the opposite of what VF advocates, e.g., to complain, take out anger on others, to become depressed, and to give up? Homework: 1) What Can You Commit To? due Monday after break Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2012

  5. How Many Meanings Can We Make? • You’ve seen motivational posters before, right? • Now’s your chance: your task is to make your own meanings from pictures, and to display them proudly on the wall for all to ponder and learn from. • Your group has 10 pictures. Talk amongst yourselves about what would be deep, meaningful statements about life that could go along with the pictures, and once you’ve reached consensus, write your meaning below the picture. • Try to mix it up: One could be serious, one could be humorous; one might be negative and cynical; one might be positive and hopeful. • If you finish early, you clever students, see how many more meanings you can come up with! Homework: 1) What Can You Commit To? due Monday after break Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2012

  6. Exit Ticket On your paper, answer the following: • If you were to describe Viktor Frankl’s philosophy in 1-3 sentences, what would you say? • In your understanding, what does it mean to “make meaning” of your experiences? Make sure your name is on your paper! Homework: 1) What Can You Commit To? due Monday after break Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2012
