Viktor Frankl Discussion Qs • If no one had heard of VF and you had to describe his views in one sentence, what would you say? • Man’s Search for Meaning is often quoted by individuals as being one of the most influential books in their lives. Why do you think this might be? • Do you see any tension or problems between VF’s and EW’s perspectives? Can their perspectives be reconciled? (reconcile = coexist, be compatible) • Why do you think VF’s ideas were considered revolutionary, and are still considered pretty radical by many? • Do you think it’s possible to live by VF’s philosophy? Why/why not? How could we get better at it? • Do you see any potential danger in VF’s philosophy? How might it be misused or abused? • Why is it so easy for humans to do the opposite of what VF advocates, e.g., to complain, take out anger on others, to become depressed, and to give up? How Many Meanings Can We Make? • You’ve seen motivational posters before, right? • Now’s your chance: your task is to make your own meanings from pictures, and to display them proudly on the wall for all to ponder and learn from. • Your group has 10 pictures. Talk amongst yourselves about what would be deep, meaningful statements about life that could go along with the pictures, and once you’ve reached consensus, write your meaning below the picture. • Try to mix it up: One could be serious, one could be humorous; one might be negative and cynical; one might be positive and hopeful. • If you finish early, you clever students, see how many more meanings you can come up with!
