Budget Basics • Should relate to the philosophy, mission, & objectives of the organization • Should include long range plans with large projects spread out over time • Short Term (annual) vs. Long Term (5-10 yrs.) • Classifications (Operational Costs, Equipment/Supplies, HR) • Many different organizations • Categories (Equipment, Marketing, Operating) • Programs (Adults, Children, Cardio) • Zero-Base Budgeting vs. Incremental

  4. Budget Preparation • Planning Did the staff & external sources have input? Previous budgets? • Coordinating Does it take all input & embrace vision, goals, & mission? • InterpretationWhat does this mean? Does everyone understand? • Presenting Is it simple and understandable? Charts? Graphics? • Approving Do all appropriate parties formally approve it and projects? • Administering How do we put it into effect? Is it flexible? • Appraising Is there a daily, monthly, &/or quarterly evaluation of how it is working?

  5. Other Budgeting Items • PERT- Program Evaluation Review Techniques • PPBE- long range plan to accomplish an organization’s objectives by using continual feedback & updating of information to allow for greater efficiency in the decision-making process.

PPBE • Planning- have clear goals & objectives • Programming- develop activities, events, & programs that have clear & measurable results toward reaching the objectives • Budgeting- the financial plan for meeting the objectives of the organization • Evaluating- determining how well the plan is working
