  1. Serve one another

  2. Jesus is our supreme example: • Matthew 20: 20 – 28 • 20Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. • 21“What is it you want?” he asked. • She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.” • 22“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” • “We can,” they answered. • 23Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

  3. Jesus is our supreme example: • 24When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

  4. Luke 22: 24 – 27 • 24 Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them. 25 Jesus told them, “In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’ 26 But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. 27 Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.

  5. Serve one another • 1 Peter 4: 7 – 11 • 7 The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. 8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. • 10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

  6. Philippians 2: 1 – 8: • Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

  7. Philippians 2: 1 – 8: • 5In your relationships with one another, have the same attitude of mind Christ Jesus had: • 6Who, being in very nature God, • did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; • 7rather, he made himself nothing • by taking the very nature of a servant, • being made in human likeness. • 8And being found in appearance as a human being, • he humbled himself • by becoming obedient to death— • even death on a cross!

  8. Serving shows love & acts as a witness. • Matthew 5: 16 • 14“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

  9. 7 BENEFITS OF SERVING 1. Serving creates meaningful thankfulness 2. Serving blesses the person you’re serving 3. Serving encourages other Christians 4. Serving non-Christians opens them to Christ 5. Serving glorifies God for other non-Christians 6. Serving honours God 7. Serving encourages you

  10. Conclusion • Can you see a big cycle at work here? • You’re encouraged, which means… • You’ll want to serve even more, which means… • You’ll get even more encouraged, which means… • You’ll want to serve even more, which means… • May God bless His word to us today, and may we be encouraged to go on serving God and serving others, for HIS glory.
