  2. Speaking and Listening Not interrupt when someone is speaking Respond appropriately Look at who is speaking and look at the audience when speaking Speak correctly in full sentences Concentrate Be audible Follow instructions Talk on various subjects Show awareness of audience

  3. Reading Phonics Grammatical knowledge Knowledge of text Word recognition and graphic knowledge

  4. Text Content Straightforward questions Helpful clues in many books

  5. Text Content General questions

  6. Text Content Inferential comprehension Questions about the characters such as “How is he feeling?” “Why do you think he is sad?” Can they refer back to the book to show you why they think this/the text that shows it? (High level skill in Year Two and above)

  7. Phonemes What are phonemes? Single unit of sound Splitting words into phonemes: b r i ck sh e ll s t r ee t

  8. Phonics – Letters and Sounds Phase Two (Phase One is at Nursery); Individual letter sounds – s, a , t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss Children are taught these sounds with actions Need to be able to hear these sounds in a word C A T and be able to blend the sounds together to start reading CAT

Phonics – Letters and Sounds Phase Three Consonant digraphs – ch, sh, th, ng Vowel graphemes – ai, ee, igh, oa, oo (long and short), ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er Children are taught these in order through a variety of activities and games Children generate and spell words for each one

  10. Phonics – Letters and Sounds Phase Four Revision phase Ensures all children get full coverage and an opportunity to review any difficult areas Allows children progressing through any class combination to be taught all sounds in the phases

  11. Phonics – Letters and Sounds Phase Five and Six Grouping the alternatives together for each phoneme – i.eai can also be ay, a-e, ea, aigh, eigh, ey (rain, day, lane, great, straight, eight, they) Prefix, suffix, teaching strategies to help with difficult words

  12. Phonics Screening Check For all pupils in Year 1 Administered in June Pass or Fail Any pupils who fail will be tested again at the end of Year 2

  13. Writing Full sentences Talk for writing – Talk Topics Add interest The man ran to his house. The tall, young man ran quickly to his large, red house. Sentence starters Conjunctions Complete texts – the more they read the better their vocabulary and writing imagination will be.

Punctuation and Grammar Terminology taught at Year 1: Word sentence letter capital letter full stop punctuation singular plural question mark exclamation mark Terminology taught at Year 2: Noun noun phrase statement question exclamation command compound suffix adjective adverb verb tense (past and present) apostrophe comma

  15. Year 2 SPAG test Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar What type of word is underlined in the sentence below? Poppy held the baby rabbit gently in her arms. What type of word is brave in the sentence below? The brave mouse marched up to the lion. Tick the sentence that is a statement. What an interesting painting! Can you collect the crayons, please? James washed the paintbrushes. Check that your tables are clean.
