  2. In 2008 We Celebrate • Our 72nd Anniversary • Our 52nd Oral Competition Thank you for participating

  3. The Old Guard Purposes • Develop innovative programs to help improve the skills of early career engineers to become active and productive ASME members. • Assist early career members “bridge the gap” between college and professional life, and to bring them closer to the activities of ASME.

  4. The Old Guard History • Maurice Hoopes, in 1936, became “dues exempt” but felt he had not yet fulfilled his obligations to ASME. • He wished to keep paying his dues and use the money for the benefit of younger and student members.

  5. The Old Guard History • Committee founded to solicit and administer funds from other “dues exempt” members for the same purpose. • In 1948, Mrs. James Seymour established a fund in memory of her husband to encourage the professional development of younger society members.

  6. The Old Guard History • Became “Old Guard Committee” in 1954 • “Old Guard Oral Competition” began in 1956 based on activities at regional conferences.

  18. The Old Guard Contests Early Career Essay Contest • Developed to engage early career engineers in communicating advice and guidance based on their own personal / professional experiences and their relationship with ASME to new graduates. • 2006 Contest Winner is J. Andrew Baker
