Workforce Development & Recruitment SCA Training Programme update • Core, specialist and management short courses • 2011-12: 139 courses with 2,143 places • 2012-13: 123 courses with 1,968 places • Cost per place has decreased from £56 to £54 (includes planning & commissioning, trainers, venues, refreshments, admin, IT, quality assurance, evaluation)

Take-up and Developments • Programme revised – CQC requirements, increased personalisation & provider priorities • 15 approved training suppliers • Co-facilitation with experts by experience • Take up risen from 74% to 83% places available over last year • Improved administration & on-line booking • Participant quality ratings consistently excellent – good

Recruitment • DNAs and advance cancellations for SCA training courses have doubled since June • Surrey Connects Sept 2012: particular demand for care assistants and home carers across most areas in Surrey • Recent feedback from providers to CWi indicates financial squeeze is impacting on retention and ability to maintain high quality workforce development

Workforce Challenges - CWi • There is a need for clear direction to align policy developments with practice, especially in relation to personalisation. • Workers need a breadth of knowledge and flexibility to meet the changing demands of people who use social care services, especially people with complex needs. • Supervision and effective support for workers is increasingly challenging with a dispersed workforce. • Maintaining high-quality workforce development programmes requires creative approaches in the light of available funding.

  8. Proposals for Specialist WD • Communicating with people who have a learning disability – above basic awareness • Activities planning • MCA with a focus on safeguarding, raising concerns and use of restraint
