  1. Light Microscopy&Electron Microscopy Brittany Evans and Greg Westry

  2. How Microscopes Work • They increase magnification so that small objects appear larger. • The glass lens increases focusing power. • Because the glass lens makes the object appear closer, the image on the back of the eye is bigger than it would be without them.

  3. Light Microscopes • Operate with visible light. • Use two magnifying lenses & a variety of correcting lenses. • They are not powerful enough to resolve many of the structures within a cell.

  4. Types of Light Microscopes • Bright-field microscope • Dark-field microscope • Phase-contrast microscope • Differential-interference-contrast microscope • Fluorescence microscope • Confocal microscope

  5. Electron Microscopes • Employ electron beams. • They have 1,000 times the resolving power of a light microscope.

  6. Types of Electron Microscopes • Transmission electron microscope • Scanning electron microscope

  7. Questions 1. All of these are true about Light Microscopes EXCEPT : a) Uses two magnifying lenses. b) They are powerful enough to resolve many of the structures within a cell. c) Operates with visible light. d) Uses a variety of correcting lenses. 2. Electron Microscopes have _____ the resolving power of a light microscope. a) 50x b) less c) 10x d) 100x

  8. Answers 1. All of these are true about Light Microscopes EXCEPT: b) They are powerful enough to resolve many of the structures within a cell. 2. Electron Microscopes have _____ the resolving power of a light microscope. d) 100x
