  1. Filipino Culture By: Mohana Sarmiento

  2. History • The Philippines was discovered in March 1521 by a Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan. The Spanish regime lasted for 300 years.

  3. But before Philippines was discovered, the Aetas are the aborigines of the Philippines who were called Negritos by the Spaniards because of their dark skin. Then Chinese traders settled in the country.

  4. And during WW2 Japanese tried to conquer Philippines but they were defeated by Americans.

  5. Language Studies suggest that there are more than 70 different dialects spoken inside the Philippine Peninsula. Pilipino or Tagalog is the national and widely spoken. In some places, Spanish left a huge residue and are still mixed spoken

  6. Some Tagalog Phrases: Kamusta ka?(Ka-moos-ta ka?) How are you? Ako si *insert name here*. (A-ko see...) I am *insert name here* Saan ka nakatira? (Sa-an ka na-ka-ti-ra?) Where do you live? Ganda mo. (Gan-da moh.) You’re pretty. Gwapo mo. (Gu-wa-po moh.) You’re handsome.

  7. Religion The Philippines in general, has the strongest Christian influence in Asia. There are 50 other religions. Majority of Filipinos are Catholics and most are fanatically involved.

  8. Lives of Filipinos evolve on their religious beliefs. They believe that God and its saints are the ones responsible for what they are and how they live. This is evident in their celebrations of town fiestas and festivals every year.

  9. Respects Until this decade, Filipinos are still adopting their old tradition of showing their respect to older persons. Like, every time you enter into a house, you have to reach for the hand of the older person and touch the back of their hand to your forehead. It is just the same as a kiss in the Western countries. And the use of “po” or “opo” as a gesture of respect to someone to whom you are talking with who is older than you.

  13. Clothing Barong and Maria Clara are the traditional clothing worn on special occasions. Philippine climate is humid all around the year. It is best to wear cotton fabrics and light footwear

  15. Communication • In rural and urban areas, Filipinos often call their attention by saying “Hoy!" (Hey!) • An expression to greet a close friend like: "what's up," one usually whips his head upward for acknowledgment. • Sometimes, when friends gather, high-fives are called by the locals as “Apir!” (Appear). • Telecommunications, and e-mail are popular as well as the usage of cell phones. • Many Filipinos, even those who live in poverty, own mobile phones. • Sending SMS messages is a common way of communication, as it is cheaper than making a call.

  16. The Philippines is considered to be the Text capital of the world. Sending millions of text messages a day.

  17. Fashion Filipinos are always updated in fashion based from latest trends in Europe, USA and Asia. There is wide variety of shopping malls to select from, starting from an ordinary crowd to an upscale expensive spender.

Courtship • Parents would allow young men to propose to their young ladies at home rather than courted in the streets. • Traditionally, Filipinos still observe the "no touch" policy, a trait that emphasizes conservatism and strong religious seal between young couples. • In some areas, they still follow the “harana” suitors sing outside the house of ladies if they visit them, and would help the lady with the household chores.

  21. Government The highest and powerful position in the country is the President and they are following a democratic way of government. The Palace Pres. Gloria Arroyo

  22. Education Filipinos prioritize education for their children rather than owning a house. Students in public schools are required to wear uniforms. Elementary schools from Grade 1 to 6, and High school 1st year to 4th year.
