  3. What is sex?

  4. Sex Is the biological and physiological differences between men and women. These differences are natural because they are given from birth

  5. What is Gender?

  6. Gender Is the social relationships between men and women and the way that relationship is made by society. i.e. how we are shaped after we are born into society

  7. Gender Roles • Are the expectations for behaviour and attitudes that the culture defines as appropriate for men and women.

  8. The Social Construction of Gender • The many different processes by which the expectations associated with being a boy (man) and being a girl (woman) are passed on through society.

  9. Social Construction of Gender • Gender Socialization has four central elements: Social Construction of Gender

  10. Social Construction of Gender contd… 1. MANIPULATION: • Parents encourage or discourage ways of behaving in their children on the basis of what they consider to be ‘normal’ or ‘abnormal’ behaviours for a male or female child

  11. Social Construction of Gender contd… 2. CANALIZATION: • Parents direct their children’s interests towards what they consider ‘appropriate’ roles, games and toys for their gender.

  12. Social Construction of Gender contd… 3. VERBAL APPELLATION: • The use of language to label children in a way that reinforces appropriate gender identification.

  13. Social Construction of Gender contd… 4. DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES: • Girls are encouraged to participate in indoor activities which are often ‘domestic’ in nature, while boys are encouraged to participate in more ‘outdoor’ activities.

  14. Gender Concepts… Gender Equality - • The different behaviour, aspirations and needs of women and men are considered, valued and favoured equally. Gender Equity • Fairness of treatment for women and men, according to their respective needs. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but which is considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations and opportunities. • Equity = a means ; • equality = the goal.

Gender Concepts… Women’s Empowerment- • women taking control over their lives : setting own agendas, gaining skills, solving problems and developing self- reliance and speak out against the inequality found in the home, workplace and community. Gender Gap – • The difference in any area between women and men in terms of their levels of participation, access to resources, rights, power and influence, remuneration and benefits.

  16. Gender Concepts… Glass Ceiling – • Invisible artificial barriers, created by attitudinal and organizational prejudices that block women from senior executive management positions. Gender Mainstreaming- • Ensuring that gender perspectives and attention to the goal of gender equality are central to all activities, policy development, research, advocacy/dialogue, legislation, resource allocation, planning, implementation and monitoring of programmes and projects

  17. Gender & International Conventions - Nigeria Nigeria is a signatory to many international treaties and Goals related to Gender Equality, including women participation in peace and security: 1. Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) 2. Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action, 1995 3. Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa, 2004 4. UN Security Council Resolution 1325 5. African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, 1981 6. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 7. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Conclusion • Gender Equality is Central to achievement of sustainable peace and development. • Human Development, if not engendered is endangered! • There are 3 principles for engendering human development: • equality of rights between women and men; • women must be regarded as agents and beneficiaries of change; • wider choices for both women and men & equal opportunities by women and men to make those choices

  19. Conclusion • As Media Practitioners, we have a strategic role to contribute in the promotion of Gender Equality, Women Empowerment & Peace. • Lets collectively work together to cause the positive change.
