Making Peace with the Past – Stacey Kratz • To the Mormon pioneers who bumped their wagons down Emigration Canyon in late July 1847, the valley of the Great Salt Lake looked like a clean slate ready to be filled with prosperity and posterity. But the land they took possession of was already full of generations of people living an abundant life. “The Indian people watched the pioneers come in… They were lying in scrub oak and bushes. I don’t know that the settlers knew they were there…but they were.

  5. Debate • Who has the right to the land? • The Natives who lived there for generations? • Or the pioneers who were seeking a better life? • What would America look like today if Native lands had NOT been taken away?

  6. Consequences Food Sources • As settlers move in, buffalo become scarce. • Why? • The settler’s domesticated cattle is easy-to-get food source for Natives • Natives steal cattle from pioneers • Are they just compensating for their lost buffalo? • Or is this just stealing?

Consequences Diseases • Natives were not resistance to White diseases • Typhoid, diphtheria, scarlet fever, chicken pox, measles, etc. • MANY Natives died • Is it the pioneers fault that they brought diseases with them? Could they have done anything to prevent it? Scarlet Fever Typhoid Measles

  8. Clash of Culture • Natives Misunderstood Pioneers • Why have so many harsh rules? • Why farm, when you can gather? • Why build with stone? • Why have schools when learning occurs at home?

  9. Clash of Culture • Mormons Misunderstood Natives • Why abandon older members to elements? • Why leave disabled children to die? • Why sell each other into slavery? • Why not live in clean, indoor buildings?

Let’s Segregate Ourselves • Stand in front if you LIKE to read • Stand in back if you HATE to read • Stand in front-right if your favorite music is rock • Stand in front-left if your favorite music is rap/hip-hop • Stand in back-right if your favorite music is country • Stand in back-left if your favorite music is pop

  11. Conflict Among Tribes Increases Tension • Shoshones, Utes and Paiutes did not get along • Disagreements Over Land • Retaliation or Revenge • Male Adulthood Rituals • Ute Leader, Walkara wanted Mormons as Allies • Help kick Paiutes out • Trading Partners

  12. Cooperation • There was some friendly cooperation • Utes and Shoshones helped Pioneer’s gather roots • Survive winter together • Friendships • Trade • Sometimes Mormon-Indian alliances were viewed negatively • Government feared a takeover
