  3. ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTIONS(cont’d) • The following physical, biological & cultural resources may all be affected: • Water • Air • Soil • Wildlife • Historic and prehistoric sites

  4. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS • Potential impacts resulting from the activities identified may be detrimental or beneficial Detrimental Impacts • Soil (erosion, permeability) • Diminished seed viability • Diminished water quality • Diminished air quality

  5. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS(cont’d) Beneficial Impacts • Reduction of fire hazard • Control of invasive plant species • Improve wildlife habitat

  6. APPLICABLE REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS • Migratory Bird Treaty Act • Endangered Species Act • CAA

  7. OTHER REQUIREMENTS • DOE Wildland and Prescribed Fire Management Policy • DOE Secretarial Memorandum (Fire Management Program) dated May 11, 2001 • 2001 Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy

  8. ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVES AND TARGETS • Example of an objective: • Improve wildlife habitat • Targets may include: • Reduction of fuel loads in specific areas • Eradication of invasive plant species • Replant/reseed area with wildlife food species

  9. CHECKING AND CORRECTIVE ACTION • Conduct post-fire surveys at earliest opportunity to determine extent of damage • Restore/rehabilitate burned areas as appropriate
