  1. Measurement Exploring Technology

  2. Discussion • Take out a blank piece of paper and on one side, list three things that you could measure and three types of measurement. • Class: Make a list on board.

  3. What is measurement? • Dimensions, quantity, or capacity • Expressed in units • Instruments • A reliable scale can measure anything.

  4. Units of Measurement • Determined by International treaties • U.S. Customary • Foot, pound, inch • Used in the U.S. and a little in Britian • Metric or SI • Decimal based using increments of 10 • Meters and grams • World-wide • Easier to use

  5. Length • Measured by rulers and tape measures • US: Mile, yard, inch, fraction of an inch • Metric: Kilometer, meter, centimeter, & millimeter

  6. Weight/Mass • Measured by a weighing scale • Balance, spring scale, or digital scale • US: Ton, pound, ounce, grain • Metric: Kilogram, gram, milligram

  7. Volume • US: Gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce, tablespoon, teaspoon • Metric: Milliliter, liter

  8. Time • Most common forms: clock & calendar • Less common: sun dial, hour glass, H20 Clock • Millisecond, second, minute, hour, day week, fortnight, month, year, decade, century, millenium

  9. Other Common Forms • Temperature • Degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit • Angles • Degrees & radians • Information • Bits, bytes, kb, mb, gb • Area, electricity, power, force, energy, speed, acceleration, velocity, density, luminance, magnetic strength, frequency, pressure, wealth, and amount of matter.

  10. Why is measurement important? • NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter was send to enter the orbit of Mars in 1999, but was instead destroyed due to miscommunications about the value of forces. • In Exp. Tech: CAD and bridge design • Why else is measurement important?

  11. Fractions • Smaller than one inch • Numerators and denominators • Simplify to lowest form • Divide by two until numerator is an even number • Paper-folding drill

  12. Activities • Funbrain.com/measure • Worksheets
