Profile of PtJ • We manage the funding of research and innovation • We combine scientific, structural and administrative competence • Services: • Analysis of scientific and technological trends • Moderation and development of innovation strategies • Development, implementation of funding programmes • Coordination of European and international funding initiatives • Evaluation of funding programmes • Advice on national and European research funding • Research communication and event management

ERA-Net – definition and implications • Initiative of the EU-Commission implemented since FP6 • Objective: to develop and strengthen the coordination of public research programmes carried out at national or at regional level • A step by step approach: • Systematic exchange of information & best practice • Definition and preparation of joint activities • Implementation of joint activities • Funding of transnational research • Participants: national or regional programme owners or managers from at least 3 different MS or AS

The special case: Eco-Innovation • High political relevance (SDS, ETAP, Lead market initiative, Lisbon strategy, European recovery plan) • Different activities and programmes for supporting eco-innovation (CIP, INNOVA and related networks) • Strong support by the EU-Commission; integrating interests from different DGs • But: • Very broad and not easy to handle • Combining technological, economic, ecological and social aspects of innovation • Addressing each sector of everyday’s life which lacks sustainability

ERA-net-Toolbox • Systematic exchange of information and best practice, discussion forum for (common) strategy and programme development in the field of eco-innovation • Identification of interfaces of existing research lines and better synchronisation of national programmes • Definition, preparation, implementation and evaluation of joint activities and funding of joint trans-national research • Networking with Technology-Platforms; exchange on Strategic Research agendas • Networking with relevant ERA-Nets for coordinating research funding activities

ERA-Net on Eco-Innovation – scientifictargets • 1) to perform R&D with the purpose of eco-innovation resulting in or aimed at significantly improving environmental protection; and • 2) to perform R&D with the purpose to broaden the application of eco-innovation that is novel to the individual or societal user and which results, throughout its life cycle, in a reduction of environmental risk, pollution and the negative impacts of resources use (including energy use) compared to relevant alternatives” • 3) to perform R&D to understand the obstacles hindering eco-innovations penetrating markets and how to overcome them

State of the art • 18 countries/regions in Europe confirmed to participate • 9 more countries/regions expressed their interest • Partners from Ministries/agencies of science, environment, innovation • Planned duration of the project: 3-4 years • Joint activities; higher education, staff exchange, Research agenda • Joint transnational Calls; two calls (are to be confirmed by the consortium)

The Agenda – towards the ERA-Net on Eco-Innovation • 21 October; preparatory meeting in Katowice • 4-5 November; OECD conference on Eco-Innovation • 13 November; Workshop on RTD questions with EU-COM • December; Meeting with Work package leaders • 19 January 2010 – 5 p.m.; Call Deadline – submission of proposal
