  1. MALDIVES- Story of Vilufushi INTRODUCTION Maldives is an coral-based Island nation with 1190 islands. Among them 201 are inhabited and 90 are tourist resorts and the remaining islands are used for agricultural purposes. The country has population of 360,000 and some 180,000 immigrated workers, mostly from SAARC member countries. The Country is administratively divided into 7 regions, which is called “Provinces” and each province consists of 2 to 4 atoll. Each atoll consists a number of islands ranging 20 to 80 islands.

  2. About the Province • The South Central Province is consist of Thaa Atoll and Laamu Atoll. In south central province there are total of 66 Islands out of which 25 islands are inhabited. • Vilufushi is just like any other island like this. Vilufusi

  3. About VILUFUSHI • The original Vilufushi Island surface area is about 15 hectare and it is been heavily urbanized with a population density over 100 people per hectare • They enjoyed the highest per capital income in the country, fishing being the major industry.

  5. An Island with no destiny • Friendly Western countries pledged to re-build the island. • The island was going to be built as the best safe island or a model island that will be resilient.

TSUNAMI DISASTER-EFFECTS/ EPISODES • 26th December 2004 Tsunami the Vilufushi Island was been destroyed, so that the people of Vilufushi Island have been taken to the Buruni Island in Tha.atoll. • To provide the shelter to the people of Vilufushi. Desaster management center has builte 152 temprery housing unit in Buruni Island. Life in Buruni

HOW THE ISLAND WAS DEVELOPED • Vilifushi Island is the first Island have decided by the government as a safe Island, the mega project of developing Vilufushi Island was carried out with foreign aids. • Old Vilufushi Island had demolished and land reclamation has done to make the Island as develop for one of safe Island in Maldives. • The Island Vilufushi develop with all basic infrastructure. LIFE AFTER RE-SETTLEMENT • Life in artificial land of Vilufushi the lively hood are facing problem, by instability of ground elevation. • The ground water has been polluted in the reclaimed area. • The environment of Vilufush island need to be clean from the debris left in the Vilufushi Island. • As because of building stranded housing big families are facing problem of accommodating whole family in one house.

  10. What is immediately felt . • Utility Cost is high. • Missing crucial areas like boat beaching and boat beaching. • No place for Agricultural Work

THE FUTURE PLAN • It is very much needed for a desalination plant to provide sweet water to the community. • And also it is important to provide housing units for the people that they don’t have shelter. • It has to protect the north said of the Island by putting a revetment. • A slipway is needed for community • To make the Island safe it is impotent to protective walls around the Island.

  13. What is Missing • Environment related problems: No adequate Vegetation/No reliable garbage disposal arrangment • No economic base, to restore lifeline. • No Continuity to beyond resettlement. • Less social intergration

  14. Conclusion/ Our Messege • Resilience should not be confined to concrete structure but should be total, to environment, sustainable economy and social cohesion and harmoney. • Networking with other othe communities, possibly through sister-city arrangements.
