  6. A. They were SELF-SUFFICIENT – Able to get along without help; independent

  7. B. The serfs/peasants raised/produced nearly everything needed for daily life

  8. C. Exceptions = salt, iron, millstones

  9. Based on relationship between lord and serfs: THE LORD PROVIDED TO THE SERFS: • Housing • Rented land • Protection from his knights SERFS PROVIDED TO THE LORD: •Labor on Lord’s Manor • Care of animals • Maintained the Estate • Gave a portion of their own crop as rent for land

  10. A serf’s life – was very difficult1. Taxes – paid high taxes to lord and church called tithes

  11. A. Tithes – tax - 10% of your annual income to the church

  12. 1. Marriage – could not marry without lord’s permission

  13. 2. Clothing – it was a crime to wear clothes outside of your social class

  14. 3. Housing – 2-3 rooms in which animals lived for warmth and protection

  16. 5. Hygiene – Did not bathe/change clothes – (lice/fleas)

  17. Design Your Own Manor Your manor must have the following: 6 buildings essential for your manor to be self-sufficient 5 elements of defense for your castle 4 crops you will grow 3 types of animals you will raise 2 sources of water 1 manor name and flag

  18. Design Your Own Manor On the back of your Manor diagram you must answer the following questions in complete sentences (not including #1): • What were your five elements of defense. 2. What makes a manor self-sufficient? 3. Why did a manor have to be self sufficient?
