  3. ECE- 342-COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS I • 1. History of electronic communication. Introduction to telecommunications: definition and importance of communications. • 2. Elements of communication systems: basic block diagram; sources, transmitter, channels, receiver. Destination and noise. • 3. Types of electronic communications: simplex; amplitude modulation (AM) and Frequency modulation (FM) broadcasting, cable TV, paging, telemetry, surveillance. Duplex: telephones, data communication,

  4. ECE- 342-COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS I (CONT..) • 4. LANS and WANS, internet, Fax mail and radar. Electromagnetic spectrum from audio frequencies to cosmic rays; radio frequency (RF), visible spectrum and micro wave ranges, bandwidth and frequency management. • 5. Analogue carrier modulation and demodulation Schemes: Amplitude modulation (AM), Frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation and demodulation schemes. Pulse modulation (PAM) sampling theorems; pulse width modulation (PWM) pulse position modulation (PPM) and their reception principles. • AM and FM transmitters and receivers: modulator and demodulator circuits, pre – emphasis and de- emphasis. • 6. Classification of noises and types in communication systems. Noise performance in various modulation schemes, noise figures and signal – to – noise ratios.

  5. ECE 421-COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS II • 1. Signal digitization: pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), sampling theorems and sampling circuits. Pulse code modulation (PCM). • 2. Quantization methods: Uniform and companding methods; vocoders; signal – to – quantization noise ratio. Delta modulation (DM) and adaptive delta modulation (ADM) principles and analysis. Coding methods. Information entropy and information capacity, bits, bit rate and the baud. Pulse transmission, intersymbol interference and the eye pattern. • 3. Digital Modulation: M-ary encoding. Amplitude shift keying (ASK), frequency shift keying (FSK) phase shift keying (PSK) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and differential phase shift keying (DPSK). Signal recovery in ASK, FSK, & PSK. Probability of error and bit error rate. Spread spectrum. Design aspects of radio links. Measurements performed on digital radio systems.

Multiplexing: Frequency division multiplex (FDM), time division multiplexing (TDM), plesiosynchronous digital hierarchy (PDH), synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH), synchronous optical network (SONET). • 6. High - Speed Systems: Local data transmission; 56k Modems (v.90) line signals; high – speed digital subscriber line (HDSL); asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL); very – high – speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) and the integrated services digital network (ISDN)
