  2. Fluency

  3. Fluency- Reading with Appropriate Phrasing Good Readers: Use punctuation marks to guide their phrasing. Pause between groups of words that go together.

  4. Let’s choral read this focusing on phrasing. From “From the Notebooks of Leonardo” by Nick D’Alto The chain and gears that power your bicycle were first designed in 1490. By whom? Of course…Leonardo da Vinci! It was also Leonardo who invented the first contact lenses, the monkey wrench, the rotisserie oven, and the diving snorkel. He even developed an early form of air conditioning – five centuries ago! Although most of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions never actually were made during his time, he still may have been the greatest inventor who ever lived. In his remarkable notebooks, the Italian master designed futuristic devices that were centuries ahead of their time. Some of his ideas still look modern today.

  5. Vocabulary

  6. gesture A gesture is something you say or do in order to express a lot of feeling to someone. Katie’s family is showing a kind gesture. What would be an example of a gesture of friendship? A hug (thumbs up) or a punch (thumbs down)?

  7. gesture Pantomime a gesture for the following words or phrases. Come here. Hi! Let me help you pick up your papers.

  8. envisioned If you have pictured something in your mind, you have envisioned it. John envisioned a plan for his dream home. What could he do to show what he has envisioned? Turn and Talk to your group.

  9. envisioned What do you envision yourself doing for a career when you get older? Turn and Talk to your group.

Turn and tell your partner. • The letters ck stay together because they form one sound /ck/

  12. explosion • Turn and tell your partner what the 3 medial consonants are. • explosion • Hold up the number of fingers that show how many syllables are in this word • ex/plo/sion-3 syllables • Turn and tell your partner why pl will stay together in the 2nd syllable. • pl forms the blend /pl/ • Thumbs up if the 2nd syllable is open, thumbs down if it is closed. • If you gave a thumbs up you are right!

  13. Remember: In a word with three medial consonants, the two consonants that stand for one sound, or form a blend, stay together when the word is divided into syllables.
