FRExample 1ELANCE “Lance” How do you promote yourself as a freelancer? Is it primarily through YouTube, or do you advertise locally (newspapers, etc.)? How do you manage your business, in terms of staying on track with current projects, and managing finances? Are there any programs you use for this, e.g. MS Excel? How do you stay up-to-date with what's going on in your industry -- hardware and software, current trends, etc.? Do you attend special events such as product launches? How do you get feedback from others (from clients or other professionals, for example), and how does this affect your work? Mainly via my YouTube/social media work - doing the kind of work I'd like to be hired to do - contacting companies, etc. and a little bit via good ol' "networking" - people I know who know what I do and know when to call for services. I'm in the lucky position of being able to monetize the work that I do in order to attract gigs - so I get to just do the work and use it to attract more work. Works for review samples and etc. too, by the way - if I want to review more of a product category, I just have to review some stuff in that category and requests/opportunities come in! (Obviously having an established audience is a catalyst for this.) Google Docs/Drive/Sheets (with some clever scripting), Google Calendar, email and post-it notes are my best friend. I have a Google Sheet that I can input my video ideas to and track their progress and then auto-moves them away as I finish them. (Admittedly I put so many on here I end up abandoning it for a couple months at a time - like 300+ ideas per category.) I map everything I can on GCal and use reminders for top priority tasks for the day/week. All my video scripts are in GDocs and sorted by year and status.Finances are also tracked by Google Sheets for income and expenses, set to auto-total and etc. As I manage my email receipt notices, I update it. I wouldn't be able to have my taxes done without that. Thankfully by being in the YouTube-ing/creator space, staying up to date isn't too difficult. Other tech creators that cover news and trends, lots of discussion in the Twitter-verse, occasionally checking through news sites and etc. There are specific niche topics (streaming, video production, camera gear) that I try to stay as up-to-date as possible on, whereas other topics (like smartphones) I only learn whatever ends up in my feeds. Also Google's homepage integration thing on my Android phone sometimes notifies me of things that it thinks are super relevant to me. Feedback from clients is either done via email conversations (or dreaded phone meetings) or with collaboration tools such as Google Drive (Docs/etc.) or Wipster. Other professionals is either sent via YouTube comments/social media feeds, or sent privately. I'm always looking for tips to improve - but admittedly we're mostly all in a "learning as we go" phase. Feedback from clients can directly improve the work I'm doing from them, but also helps with things I know to do/not to do for future projects.
