Second Languages • The UNC college system requires a minimum of 2 credits in the same foreign language. Three credits are recommended. (Honors credit is earned for Level III and above). Level III is an immersion class. • Levels I and II are taken the same year whenever possible. • Unless students are continuing the study of a language from middle school, or wish to take second language each year of high school, they are advised to wait until Grade 10 or 11 to begin their foreign language sequence.

Recommendations and Waivers • Teachers recommend students for courses for which they feel the student will be most successful. They consider a student’s aptitude as well as work habits. • A waiver must be filled out for each class that differs from the teacher’s recommendation and returned to Student Services. • Waivers can be downloaded from www.apexhigh.com.
Dual Enrollment • If your student plans to take a course anywhere other than AHS they must : • Talk to the counselor first to ensure the course can be added to theAHS transcript • Fill out the “Dual Enrollment” form and obtain signatures from both the school counselor and Mr. Wight • Return the dual enrollment form to thecounselor • Upon course completion, have an official copy of the transcript sent to the counselor! Failure to do so could result in an “F” on the transcript.
Registration Timeline • February 6 and 12 • Grade level meeting presentations • February 25 • Register for courses for 2013-2014 on SPAN, students will receive instructions in homeroom • March 15 • Signed registration form is due to current math teacher or Student Services • April 12 • Students MUST check course verification on SPAN, 8 primary courses and 3 alternates; changes can be made by printing course verification sheet, writing in changes, obtaining parent signature and bring into Student Services. • April 26 • Last day to make changes!
Athletic Requirements • 85% Attendance required during the semester prior. • Under 19 on or before October 16th • Must have passed 3 of 4 courses during the previous semester • Must maintain overall 1.5 GPA • Must not be convicted of a felony • Must live in the school district / school assignment area, and enroll no later than the 15th day of the present semester

PSAT • PSAT (Previously Released SAT Test) • Given once per year at AHS in October • Free to all sophomores • ~$15 for juniors who sign up • In December students received a test booklet, a profile sheet with the correct answers, the student’s answers, and login for MyCollegeQuickstart, which provides suggestions for improvement
PLAN • Sophomores also took the PLAN (the practice ACT) in October. Results were distributed in December. • This test is currently administered annually to sophomores at no cost to parents.

ACT • Juniors are taking the ACT on March 5th at AHS . The exam is administered to the entire junior class at no cost. • Current sophomores should use PLAN results to help study for the ACT next year.
