  1. CHITON By : Tessie Koulis

  2. What Arechitons? Chitons are mollusks in class Polypacophora, distinguished by their characteristic shells, which Consist of eight overlapping plates. They are found all over the world and fossil evidence Suggests that they have been around for a long time.

  3. Like other mollusks, a large part Of a chitons body is a large, muscular foot, surrounded by gills and a protective mantle. Chitons place themselves along rocks with their feet and scrape the rocks from algae and other form on nutrition. A chiton is in an oblong shape and most can be difficult to find since they have protective coloration which helps them blend in. Other chitons are radiant and very colorful; these organisms come in a wide range of colors and sizes.

  4. Habitat Chitons live worldwide, in cold water and in the tropics. They mostly inhabit intertidal or subtidal zones. They live on hard surfaces such as rocks. Some species live fairly high in the intertidal zone while some species of Chiton live in deep water (20, 000 ft).

  5. Shell The shell of a chiton is very protective and made entirely of aragonite. They are variously colored, patterned, smooth or sculptured. The shell is divided into eight articulating valves which embed in the chitons tough muscular body. This allows chitons to roll into a protective ball when dislodged and cling tightly to irregular surfaces.

  6. Diet Algae, seaweed debris, dead animals, small worms and crustaceans. They eat using their radula.
