  1. ORIGIN OF THEATRE THE GREEKS

  2. IT ALL STARTED WAY BACK IN GREECE… • The earliest origins of drama are to be found in Athens where ancient hymns, called dithyrambs, were sung in honor of the god Dionysus.

  3. These hymns were later adapted for choral processionsin which participants would dress up in costumes and masks.

  4. THE FIRST “ACTOR” • According to tradition, in 534 or 535 BC, Thespis astounded audiences by leaping on to the back of a wooden cart and reciting poetry as if he was the characters whose lines he was reading. In doing so he became the world's first actor, and it is from him that we get the word THESPIAN.

  5. THE FIRST PLAYS. • The first plays were performed with just one actor (called a protagonist) and a chorus of people who helped him to tell the story. However, throughout the 5th century BC playwrights continued to add other actors.

  6. THE FIRST THEATRE… The first plays were performed in the Theatre of Dionysus, built in the shadow of the Acropolis in Athens at the beginning of the 5th century, but theatres proved to be so popular they soon spread all over Greece.

  7. THE FIRST THEATRE…

  8. THE FIRST THEATRE The paths by which the chorus and some actors made their entrances and exits. The audience also used them to enter and exit the theater before and after the performance. Where the spectators/audience sat A space where the chorus would dance, sing, and interact with the actors who were on the stage near the skene. a building behind the playing area that was originally a hut in which actors changed masks and costumes

  9. TYPES OF DRAMA… The Ancient Greeks took their entertainment very seriously and used drama as a way of investigating the world they lived in, and what it meant to be human. Drama was classified according to three different types or genres: comedy, tragedy and satyr plays.

  10. COMEDY The first comedies were mainly satirical and mocked men in power for their vanity and foolishness. The first master of comedy was the playwright Aristophanes. Much later Menander wrote comedies about ordinary people and made his plays more like sit-coms.

  11. TRAGEDY Tragedy dealt with the big themes of love, loss, pride, the abuse of power and the fraught relationships between men and gods. Typically the main protagonist of a tragedy commits some terrible crime without realizing how foolish and arrogant he has been. Then, as he slowly realizes his error, the world crumbles around him. The three great playwrights of tragedy were Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides.

  12. SO TODAY… • THE SYMBOL FOR THEATRE IS THE PAIR OF COMEDY AND TRAGEDY MASKS ONCE USED BY THE GREEKS IN THE FIRST PLAYS.
