  1. FINDING THE MAIN IDEA The MAIN IDEA is the general theme of a selection. It is important to be able to figure out the main idea of what you are reading.

  2. Some Strategies that will help you understand the main idea: Read the selection carefully. Think about the selection’s title and subheads.

  3. 3. Look for a sentence that tells what the selection is mostly about. 4. Find the important details that tell you directly about the main idea.

  4. 5. Think about what the details are mostly about. 6. Summarize what is being said in the selection.

  5. Knowing the main idea helps you to better understand everything you read, whether it’s a novel, a map, a recipe, or a newspaper.

  6. MORE THAN JUST A SWAMP

  7. Located near the international airport in Philadelphia is a national wildlife refuge.

  8. It is a wetland that attracts thousands of birds and provides a habitat for a wide range of animals, fish, and other creatures.

  9. The refuge is also enjoyed by many people who find it a wonderful place to hike and bird-watch.

  10. Several things make this refuge unusual: is in a large city; it is right beside a busy airport; and for many years, it was considered worthless land.

  11. Called “The Swamp” the refuge was a dumping ground for trash and was slowly being filled in to build houses.

  12. What saved the swamp was a small group of bird watchers and naturalists who knew its value.

  13. They began a campaign to rescue the area because of its importance for wildlife and for birds that used it as a resting place during migration.

  14. It took many years, but eventually the federal government designated the swamp as a wetland refuge.

  15. Unless you look closely, the area appears to be nothing but thousands of acres of cattails and other wetland plants.

  16. However, if you take a walk through one of the many trails in the refuge, you will discover a surprising variety of wildlife.

  17. A number of rare birds are spotted each year, and in the fall and spring, thousands of ducks and geese rest there.
