  1. Maintaining oral health is a must, but did you know that your overall health can have a significant impact on your oral health. Many chronic diseases have a direct connection to poor oral health. Oral health and other diseases are deeply linked. Oral issues can increase chronic illness and vice-versa. Some of the chronic diseases include: 1) Diabetes - It affects the body’s ability to process sugar which can result in less saliva, more cavities, gum diseases, slow healing, and infections which can cause serious oral damage. 2) Cardiovascular Diseases - The bacteria in the mouth can cause various oral infections and inflammation which may lead to heart diseases, clogged arteries, and even a possibility of stroke. 3) Cancer- Surprisingly, more than 33% of cancer patients reported an oral health issue in the early stages of cancer. Cancer eventually weakens the immune system and can cause multiple side effects to your mouth like sore mouth, dry mouth, jaw pain, bleeding, or sensitive gums.

  2. 4) HIV/ AIDS - HIV directly targets the immune system and depletes it day by day. It can weaken multiple organs and can significantly harm oral health. Symptoms include yeast infection in the mouth, white lesions on the tongue, gum disease and infection, dry mouth, ulcers, and sore mouth. 5) Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) - Multiple STI’s (Sexually Transmitted Infections) or Diseases can directly harm your oral health. Diseases like Herpes cause mouth lesions and oral infections. Painful blisters are also a symptom of alarming oral health. 6) Syphilis - It is a bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact and results in sores on lips and tongues. This is a communicable disease and proper precautions should be taken to cure it. 7) Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) - Difficulties with jaw muscles and joint pains are a sign of TMD. Clenching and constant jaw pain aggravate the problem for patients and teeth may grind frequently. Habits like biting your pen and pencil, gum problems, loose or missing teeth can cause TMD.
