  5. WHY CHOOSE HEATON MANOR? • High quality Teaching. • Excellent examination results. WHAT DO OFSTED THINK?  Achievement and standards in Post 16 are good. Students are challenged by teachers. There is a variety of stimulating activities. Students are actively involved in their own learning. Students are well motivated. Students praise the constructive relationships that they have with staff and the support they receive. Students reach high standards and work hard. Many students progress on to Higher Education. The Post 16 Council impacts positively on the school. Post 16 students have a range of opportunities to seek advice and guidance on career choices. Students make well informed decisions. Students are confident in putting forward their own ideas, using analysis and discovering things for themselves.

WHAT CAN I STUDY? • If you achieve a range of D and E grades at GCSE level then you can select the LEVEL 2&3 BTEC qualification which is a Level 2 in Business combined with a Level 3 in ICT. • If you achieve a minimum of 4 A*-C grades then you can select level 3 qualifications (AS Levels). • There are minimum entry requirements for most AS Level courses in addition to the minimum 4 A*-C grades. You will need to meet these if you want to do the course. • You will need to take a minimum of 3 AS Levels and a maximum of 5 AS Levels in year 12. • Further guidance on entry requirements and recommended number of AS courses is in the prospectus.

HOW SHOULD I DECIDE? • Interest in the course or area of study. • Good record of achievement in the course/related subject. • Style of the lessons (group work/presentations etc.) • Structure of the course (coursework and exam content) • Related to possible future career. • Requirement for further study at university. • Carefully research entry requirements – a good website is • www.ucas.com

WHAT ABOUT ENRICHMENT? • There are many enrichment opportunities that you can get involved in during the Post 16 lunchtime slot and period 7. • It is important to demonstrate involvement in school life beyond your studies. This experience is great for job and university applications. • Certificates are awarded based on the number of hours of enrichment accumulated. This can include charity fundraising. • Examples include the post 16 council, debating society, students into lessons, movie club, magazine club and more! • Student led clubs and societies are also welcome. • There may be funding available to set up and run student led clubs and societies.

WHAT IS EMA? • EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) • Must be in full time education and aged 16-19. • Household income must be less than £30,000. • A payment of up to £30 per week for students. • Must attend lessons and be punctual. • Money to spend on books or other study resources. • Bonus payments are available of £100 in January & July. • Awarded for effort grades of C or above.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? • Interviews with a Post 16 tutor. • Completion of preliminary applications. • Newcastle University HE parents event 27th Feb 2010. • Taster lessons in some subjects. • Electronic enrolment presentation. • Subject blockings released. • GCSE examination season. • Issue of GCSE results on Tuesday 24th August 2010. • Completion of the electronic enrolment form. • Support available from Post 16 tutorial team. • Induction and start of the Post 16 term.

  14. WHAT ABOUT TONIGHT? • Tonight is all about opportunities. You can…… • listen to course leaders about the structure of the course. • ask course leaders questions about the courses that you are interested in. • gather further information from the course stalls in the mezzanine area and along the first floor corridor. • ask current students about courses and their experience. • talk to the Post 16 leadership team about student support, progression and any other issues. • This evening is aimed at helping you to decide what courses you would like to do next academic year.
