  3. Agenda for this afternoon • Alphabet soup – what do all those acronyms mean? • How does the match process work? • Timeline – what do I need to do when? • HELP! Who do I go to for what?

Alphabet Soup • AMA data base of residencies FREIDA • Program that runs the computer which matches applicant to program NRMP • Program that runs the computer service for ophthalmology, child neurology: SF match • Application document service for most of you ERAS • Application document service for some of you CAS

  5. 1. Alphabet Soup ERAS (for most), CAS (for a few) = the service that collates and submits all the documents you enter to the programs you choose NRMP (for most), SF match, Urology Match, Military Match = computer service that actually matches applicant with program according to the rank lists submitted YOU WILL NEED TO REGISTER FOR BOTH: • one or more document distribution systems • one or more match systems

YOU Complete app Send to programs you are interested in Accept and go to interviews Complete your rank list THEY Download apps Offer and carry out interviews for candidates in which they are interested Complete their rank list How does the Match work? the Big Computer in the sky (NRMP/SF) compares lists, matches you with the highest of your choices possible

  8. How does the Match work? THE MATCH AGREEMENT IS A LEGALLY BINDING CONTRACT If you enter the NRMP or SF match, you are obligated to accept your placement. As with any contract, there are significant legal consequences for breaking the contract.

  11. USMLE DEADLINES • Step 2 CK – MUST TAKE by Nov 30 – NO EXCEPTIONS! • Step 2 CS – MUST TAKE by Dec 31 - NO EXCEPTIONS! Why? You cannot graduate until you have passed step 1, step 2 CK and CS

  12. DO: Department dinners Meet with dep’t advisors Careers in Medicine (AAMC) THINK ABOUT: What do I want do do when I grow up? What do I need to do to clarify specialty choice? What type of program? Geography issues? TIMELINE Now -June

DO: Put together CV Meet with letter writers Meet with department chair (s) Meet with AD to review MSPE Get copy of transcript Personal statement THINK ABOUT: What do I want do do when I grow up? What do I need to do to clarify specialty choice? What type of program? Geography issues? TIMELINE May - Aug MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED FOR USMLE!

  14. TIMELINE July - Aug DO: • Register with ERAS – July 15 myERAS opens to students • Need token (like a password) from Joanne Colligan • Your unique number will make sure all your info gets to the right places

TIMELINE Aug Letters of Recommendation: • Most programs request Chair’s letter and 3 additional • Can send different letters to different programs • At least 1 –2 from specialty in which you are applying • Ideal letter writers: • Full time faculty (not community faculty, not fellows, not residents) • Know you well • Higher the academic rank, the better

  16. TIMELINE Aug Letters of Recommendation: • Meet personally with writers • Bring ERAS cover sheet, ERAS ID number • Therefore, you should be already registered for ERAS when you meet writers • Bring CV, personal statement if possible • Ask to have done by Sept 30

TIMELINE Sept - Oct • Complete application, upload on ERAS • Personal profile (CV), transcript, USMLE scores, personal statement • Meet with dept / specialty advisors • Strategy • Identify programs of interest • Send applications to programs of choice • 1st date available = Sept 1 • Make sure letters of recommendation are in • ERAS has document tracking function

  19. TIMELINE Oct • Make sure application, including letters of recommendation, is complete BEFORE NOV 1 • Meet with dept / specialty advisors • Interview strategy • Continue to identify programs of interest • Respond to early interview requests 

  20. TIMELINE Nov • MSPE released to programs Nov 1 • Programs review app and offer interviews • Respond to interview requests  REMEMBER USMLE DEADLINES!!!

  21. TIMELINE Nov - Jan • Interviews • Remember clerkship / elective attendance policy • Non clinical time is available for interviews • A maximum of three days may be granted at the discretion of the course director as interview time.

  22. TIMELINE Jan - Feb • Finish up with interviews • Remember clerkship / elective attendance policy • Rank list • Work with your advisors!!! • Can work with at NRMP site, can re-order before final submission • Final list due mid Feb (exact date not yet avail)

  23. MATCH DAY !! NRMP Match: Thursday, March 18, 2010 Noon EST

  24. Early Matches • Urology – through urol society (AUA) – link from SF • Applications over summer • Interviews in fall • List due end Dec / early Jan, Match mid Jan • SF match • PG 2 Ophthalmology • Sept 2 CAS • Jan 8 2009 deadline for list to SF match • Match date Jan 15 • PG 3 child neurology • This year, Neurosurg will switch to NRMP • Military Match • Each branch has a system – individual advice
