  1. User notes Preparation for activity on slide 18: Go to the download page on the AC website (www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/Download). Select a learning area on the left and tick the box for scope and sequence charts from the right hand list. Print out the scope and sequence charts and glue them to card. Cut the chart into the discrete content descriptions, ready for teachers to sort.

  5. Using the ‘Search’ tool Use ‘ Search’ and type in keywordsto locate the partsof the curriculumof interest to you

  6. Process Work in groups. Each choose a different key word and key into the search bar. What results do you get? Share what you find out. Keep a list of words you cannot find and as you become more familiar with the website you will probably come across what you were looking for.

  8. The ‘Curriculum’ button • When you click on the ‘Curriculum’ button, it opensup to look like this • See multiple year levels across one learning area: English, mathematics, science or history • See multiple learning areas across one year level from Foundation to Year 10

  9. Process: exploration Explore the Australian Curriculum website by: using the Search tool browsing via the menu bar using the curriculum button to see multiple year levels and learning areas to find areas of interest

  15. Process: identifying priorities Read the Rationale and Aims of one learning area. What priorities do you identify? Work as a group to create a list of priorities for the learning area. What are the five most important points?

  16. Organisation section • The Organisation section contains furtherinformation about: • how learning area is organised • relationship between strands • content structure and achievement standards • Left hand menu – links to other parts of the Organisation section

  17. Process: contrast and compare Work in groups Within your group, look at two or more learning areas Contrast and compare the organisational structure of these learning areas. What is the same? What is different?

  19. Process: curriculum continuum This activity supports an understanding of learning, the increasing sophistication of the concepts and the language, and how the learning builds on prior learning. Ask staff to sort the content description cards into a continuum from F–10. Share the reasons for placing the content descriptions in that order. Refer to the scope and sequence and check their order and that of the actual sequence.

  23. Process: exploration Choose a learning area. Select one year level and one other filter eg history, Year 2 + personal and social capability mathematics, Year 8 + sustainability. 3. Repeat the activity with other combinations. Explore combinations that are relevant in the context of your school.

  29. More ideas for exploring the AC website! Take a guided tour through the Australian Curriculum by viewing the video clip on the homepage. Ask staff to spend 10 mins locating the curriculum content for the learning areas that they are responsible for. This can be done by searchingby learning area or by looking at the students’year level. Use the site’s filter capability to look for curriculum relating to a learning area and a general capability, egscience and critical and creative thinking. Use the filters to search for curriculum material relating to a learning area and one of the cross-curriculum priorities, egscience and sustainability.
