  1. Internet of Things Dr. JyotiBatraArora Associate Professor-IT

  2. Content Introduction Industry/Real time Applications Growth of IoT Hardware used in IoT Benefits of IoT Risks with IoT Research challenges

  3. Introduction From tooth brushes to hairbrushes, consumer and industrial devices are having chips inserted into them to collect and communicate data. Smart toasters , fitness collars for dogs and few of everyday dumb items are being connected to the web as a part of Internet of Things. People on Internet IoP Things on Internet  connected Devices IoP+connected Device  IoT

  4. Definition The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity—that enables these objects to collect and exchange data. A Phenomenon which connects a variety of things … Everything has ability to communicate.

  5. Various names, one Thing Brtish entrepreneur Kevin Ashton coined the term in 1999. M2M (Machine to Machine) “Internet of Everything” (Cisco Systems) “World Size Web” (Bruce Schneier) “Skynet” Internet of Objects

  6. Where is IOT??? • It is everywhere.

  7. Smart Appliances Wearable Tech Healthcare

  8. Growth of IOT

  9. The IoT Market As of 2015, 9.6 billion IoT units Expected to grow to 28.1 billion IoT devices by 2020 Revenue growth from $1.9 trillion in 2013 to $7.1 trillion in 2020

  10. Survey by KRC, USA in 2017

  11. Why be concerned about IOT Like all new technology, the Internet of Things brings both a beneficial and disruptive element. With the concept of “always-on”, such technology will require a change in mindset when considering implementation of products and services related to IoT. Since IoT is more and more an element in the daily lives of individuals and organizations, maintaining both privacy, security and business operations/opportunities will be more of a priority both today and in the future. IOT offers us opportunity to be more efficient in how we do things saving us time money and often emission in the process. It allows companies, government and public authorities to rethink how they deliver services and produce goods. Gartner predicts that the aggregated value and economic benefit of the IoT will exceed $7.9 trillion in the year 2020 alone.

  12. Why do connected devices need to share data? Each device collects data for a specific purpose that may be useful to a buyer and impact the wider economy. Within industrial applications, sensors on product line can increase efficiency and cut down on waste.US firm concrete sensors has created a device that can be inserted into concrete to provide data on the material’s condition.

  13. Dynamic control industry and daily life • Improves the resource utilization ratio. • Acts as technology integrator. • Universal internetworking / sensors networks • Components ofIoT • Sensor • Connectivity • People & process

  14. Information Security Office of Budget and Finance Education – Partnership – Solutions

  15. 4 layers Model of IoT Integrated Application Information Processing Network Construction Sensing and Identification

  16. Top Industries for IoT application and Revenue Generation

  17. Internet of Under ground Things Internet of Bio NanoThings

  18. Recent Developed Devices of IoT

  19. Hardware to be used in IoT Boards- microcontroller based boards, System on Chip(SOC), Single Board Computers (SBC) and purpose- built boards with support for small Bluetooth and Wifi. C.H.I.P. MediatekLinkit One Particle Photon Tessel Adafruit Flora LightBlue Bean Udoo Neo Intel Edison Raspberry pi Arduino Uno

  20. Sensors in IoT

  21. Types of sensors • Temperature sensor • Donot always In physical contact, some an detect temperature from laser. • Used in Thermostat • Resistor, temperature detector, IC (semiconductor), Infrared sensor • Proximity Sensor used in security, safety or efficiency applications Used to detect motion Used in retail industry, aprking and museum etc, Inducive sensor, Capacitive sensor, Photoelectric sensor, ultrasonic sensor

  22. Pressure Sensor • Detect pressure of liquid, gas etc. work by converting physical power into electronic signals and then sending it into the processor of the device. • Eg Barometer, pressure gauage • Used in touch screen devices, weather monitoring devices and in automotive industry. • Humidity Sensors used in thermostat and weather related IoT Devices Accelerometer, gyroscopic sensor used to detect acceleration, vibration or tilt of any object. Used to measure the angular velocity of an object. Used in pedometer, antitheft devices and leveling Mostly used in 3D mouse

  23. Optical sensor can emit, receive and convert light energy into digital signals Work by detecting electromagnetic energy and sending result to processing units Used in mining operation, oil refeineries and chemical plants • Water quality Sensor • Detect water quality and monitor primarily in water distribution system • Chlorine residual Sensor, Total Organic Carbon sensor, Turbidity Sensor, Conductivity Sensor, pH Sensor,Oxygen Reduction Potential Sensor Touch sensors, sound sensors, Motion detection sensor, gas sensor, image sensor etc.

  24. Benefits of IoT Manufacturing Efficiency – sensors embedded in manufacturing equipments can held to identify bottlenecks in manufacturing process. It reduces the manufacturing time and waste. Works on predictive maintenance. Energy Efficiency– achieve significant decrease in energy usage and monitor things like light and temperature. By processing that sensor data, intelligent algorithms can micromanage energy usage in real time far more effectively than we ever could, saving money and the planet in one fell swoop. This is how Google cut 15% of its energy expenditure in its data centers. Inventory efficiency – RFID and NFC tags on individual product help to share location of single item and can save time and lowers the labour cost. Disaster warning, Law enforcement, Elderly care and environment quality.

  25. Risks with IoT Privacy Implications- everything that’s connected to internet can be hacked, IoT products are no exception to this unwritten rule. Need of Reliable Standard High Cost of required investment in IoT infrastructure Regulation ( in terms of Data Privacy) Lack of Senior Management knowledge and commitment Weakness in organizations’ technology infrastructure Weakness in public com infrastructure available to organization General economic uncertainity Absence of business case/ model Undeveloped consumer awarness

  26. IoT Trends to Watch in the Future • IT Services– business Consulting • IoT drives demand for Data analytics- • Data must be managed, integrated and analysed • IoT drives demand for Cloud Computing • IoT data Data Broker • IoT generated data is bought, analyzed and sold. • IBM buys the Weather Company Data • Interoperability Problems • Security

  27. Research Challenges Scalability(Massive Number of Devices) Handle data generated by 50 billion devices Reliable Coverage Move Cloud Service to edge of the network(Fog computing) Reduce data to be stored(Processing and Storage) Power Consumption Problem(Energy Harvesting)
