The 15th International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (EKAW 2006) was held from October 2-6, 2006, in Poděbrady, Czech Republic. The EKAW series • History • Started as „European Knowledge Acquisition Workshop“ in 1987 • From 1992 proceedings in LNCS, from 2000 denoted as conference • Originally annual, then each 1,5 year, most recently biannual - alternation with K-CAP conference oversea (originally KAW – „Banff workshop“) • Previous: EKAW 2004, Whittlebury Hall, UK • Established community, friendly athmosphere, often location beyond big cities
Focus of the series • Knowledge engineering „in narrow sense“ • Knowledge Acquisition • Knowledge Modelling (ProblemSolving Methods, Ontological Engineering) • KBS design • Recently strong influence by Semantic Web topics • Special (intended) focus of the2006 edition: social and other kinds of networks
Some statistics of EKAW 2006 • 119 full paper submissions • almost 60% increase compared to 2004! • all reviewed by at least 3 reviewers • discussion followed for all papers with uneven ratings • 33 accepted (27.7% acceptance rate) • 17 long and 16 short papers • Posters/demos • 12 rejected papers directly accepted for posters • further 17 posters/demos submitted at later stage • of which 9 (53%) were accepted, based on 2-3 reviews and (in some cases) reviewer discussion • altogether 21 posters/demos accepted • 86 registered participants
