Perimeter, Area, Volume. How do you remember what to do?. Perimeter. Add all sides of a figure. Think of the lower case t as a + sign. Easily confused with area. Look at the word rim. Where is a rim? The rim goes around the basket. So for perimeter you go around the figure. Perimeter.

  1. Perimeter, Area, Volume How do you remember what to do?

  2. Perimeter • Add all sides of a figure. • Think of the lower case t as a + sign. • Easily confused with area. • Look at the word rim. Where is a rim? • The rim goes around the basket. So for perimeter you go around the figure.

  4. Perimeter • The race course was a 25 mile marathon. One of the sides of the course is not labeled. What would be the measurement of the side of the race course? 2 miles 2 miles 6 miles 6 miles ? miles

  5. Perimeter • An equilateral triangle has a perimeter of 12 cm. What could be the measurement of each side? • Draw your triangle. Remember an equilateral triangle has 3 equal sides.

  6. Area • Area is the measurement of the number of square units needed to cover a surface • Area is found by multiplying length times width or counting squares if they are available • Think of area as how much it covers like a blanket. • When asked for area think of squares.

  7. Area • Find the area of the rectangle. 33 meters 8 meters

  8. Area • Sally was going to buy carpet for her living room. The carpet was $8 a yard. Below are the measurements for her living room. How much was the new carpet going to cost her? 30 feet 24 feet

Volume • Volume is like an Ogre …it has layers. • Volume is the measure of the number of cubic units needed to fill the space occupied by a solid • Take the area and multiply it times the number of layers (height)- think of layers when you see the l in volume • Volume formula – length x width (area) x height • Count the boxes on the first layer then multiply times the number of layers • The volume of the box below is • Length – 5 cm • Width – 4 cm • Height – 2 cm

  10. Volume • What is the volume of a swimming pool with a width of 25 m, a length of 20 m and a height of 3 m?

  11. Volume • One of the flower beds will have a stone wall built at the corner. The stone wall needs to have a concrete foundation. There is a drawing for the trench that will be filled with concrete. Calculate the volume of concrete that will be needed. 25 feet 3 feet 5 feet

  12. Reflection • In the reflection section of your journal, write the difference between perimeter, area, and volume, how to solve them, and how you plan on remembering which is which. Make sure you use complete sentences with capital letters and end marks. After approval, you are going to type them in to your blog on Thursday.
