  2. Administrator’s Job • Principal/Director • A.D. Henderson School, a K – 8 public school • FAU High, a dual enrollment program • Unique Aspects • Developmental Research School • One-school school district - no district level personal • Mission • to be a demonstration site for teacher education, • to develop curricula, and • to conduct research.

  3. Program Planning Curriculum is developed by the teacher leaders and committees within the school. Once developed, the curriculum is shared at various conferences and workshops.

  4. Budgeting & Finance • Public school funding is determined by the state legislature each year. • Legislation determines per pupil spending formula. • Legislative requirements for the inclusion of programs and/or classes.

  5. Staff Recruitment,Selection, and Supervision • Supervision a primary job of the principal • Implementation of Marzano Evaluation Framework • Requires more observations than previous systems • Recruitment and Selection • Majority done during the summer • More pressure to fill positions at beginning of the school year and mid-year

  6. Public & Community Relations • Building relationships within the FAU community • Research opportunities • Peer tutoring with athletes and students • Developing community partnerships • Support for supplemental activities & events

  7. Marketing • Henderson students are chosen from a lottery that reflects state demographics • Ethnicity • Sex • Socio-ecomonics • FAU High • Application process to ensure students are prepared for dual enrollment program • Promote the FAU High program at various high school fairs

  8. Program Evaluation • FCAT and End of Course exams • “A” rating is the ultimate goal • PARCC and Common Core will replace FCAT in 2014 • 46 states have adopted Common Core

  9. Needed Administrative Skills • Competencies #1 – 3 most essential for the rest of the competencies to be most effective • First Break All the Rules by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman • Use a “measuring stick” to create a vibrant workplace

  10. Challenges • Student achievement • Changing students and needs • Funding • Unique to Henderson, being a one-school school district • Lack of district level support

  11. Technology • Positives: • Faster, easier communication • Ability to segregate and share data • Challenges: • Loss of “face-time” • Prepare students for computer based testing
