  1. The Grand Canal By: Zoe Dias

  2. Location Located about 14,000 miles from Olympia, The Grand Canal is in the city of Beijing, the country of China and on the continent of Asia. The absolute location of this site is 40° N and 117° E. When visiting The Grand Canal, you may travel a total of 14,000 miles an in East direction. While there, you might want to visit some nearby areas such as Mongolia to the North, Jinan to the South and Baotou to the West of The Grand Canal.

  3. How it was Built The Grand Canal was built in several different dynasties. The building first began in 486 B.C. during the Wu Dynasty. It took almost 6 years to build. Then later from 605 to 611 B.C., during the Sui Dynasty, the canal was extended further. Men put to work by the emperor of the dynasty, dug trenches for the water to flow through. The canal was built for transportation and irrigation. The canal helped move water to improve the agriculture. Later, in 604 B.C., it served as transportation for troops going to attack the state of Qui. Other things the canal was built for was communication and cultural exchange. Boats would take messages and items to trade in other cities.

  4. Description The Grand canal is a very long canal, about 1,114 miles long. The canal is almost 200 feet wide in some places and only 100 feet in others. It has many houses and roads running along its sides. The canal itself is very busy, filled with lots of small boats and docks. The water is not very clean. Its polluted and a brownish color. Also, there are almost 400 bridges stretching over the canal, some very large or some sell wooden ones.

  5. Visiting Today The Grand Canal is visible today and lots of people like to visit it. One reason to go and see it is because of how large it is; in fact it is one of the largest man-made water ways in the world. If you go during 2008 you can enjoy the Beijing Olympics. There is also a numerous amount of boat tours offered that teach you about the Grand Canal and some other Chinese historical things. If you go to see it you won't be able to see all of it in one day. Boat tours usually just take you on the main parts, and largest, parts of the canal, but they will be the most interesting.

  8. Reflections During this project I learned a lot about different places. What I learned from my project on the Grand Canal is how to use and make a power point, what the Grand Canal actually is, and where it is. It was important to do this project because in the future we will probably do other assignments and use power point and now I will know how to write up notes and research and also how to use power point. I thing something that I did well is that I found good information. I filtered through what was good and what wasn’t. Also, I tried to make the information as accurate. Something I could improve on is checking a site on the computer better. Maybe looking closer at it and really reading it. Something I will do next time to improve my report is that I will try to pick a more popular subject that is less complicated to research. My favorite part of this project was doing the design and animations. I had never done a power point before so it was fun to learn how to.
